Key Takeaways
- Quantum computing uses quantum mechanics to perform multiple calculations at once, which means that it can perform highly specific tasks better than classical computers.
- Today, the U.S. stands as the leading hub for quantum computing startups, with 77 overall.
- To-date, national funding announcements in quantum technology stand around $54 billion.
While classic computers function on 0s and 1s, quantum computers operate on “quantum bits”, or qubits that allow them to perform many calculations at the same time.
Many big tech firms are exploring quantum technologies, including Google, Amazon, and Nvidia. Moreover, major players in tech made key breakthroughs in quantum computing last year, while startup investment jumped 50% to $2 billion as interest accelerated.

With 77 quantum computing startups, America leads by a notable distance.
As one example, Boston-based QuEra Computing secured a $230 million funding round in February from investors including SoftBank and Google Quantum AI. Additionally, PsiQuantum, headquartered in California, locked in $594 million in financing from the Australian government last year.
Beyond the startup ecosystem, big tech firms are investing significantly in this technology. Nvidia, for instance, announced in March it was building a quantum computing research center in Boston to integrate with its supercomputers in efforts to bring quantum computing applications into reality.
Canada ranks second globally, at 29 startups, with key players including Xanadu Quantum Technologies and Photonic Inc.
