Meet the Haury Family

Meet the multi-generational citrus growers behind Homegrown Organic Farms’ pummelos, mandarins, and pomegranates! Jim Haury started farming his father Edgar Haury’s citrus fields planted in 1945 near Ivanhoe, California. He became a field labor contractor, working with everything from citrus to prunes to olives to cotton. Jim’s son, Greg, joined the family farming venture early on and would help with chores around the farm after school and on the weekends. After obtaining his CDL, Greg supported Jim with trucking and other farm tasks, including hauling oranges from the fields to packing houses. At one point, the duo became the main truckers for Klink Citrus in Ivanhoe, a Sunkist packing house. Jim slowly started to expand his farming, purchasing land, including his in law’s property where his wife Patty was raised. This property remains a vital part of the Haury family’s farming legacy. Originally focused on Navel oranges, the family diversified in the early 1990s by planting Pummelos, a relatively new crop in the U.S. at the time.

The Transition to Organic
Greg Haury wanted to move away from the use of chemical pesticides in the 1990’s, but it took some time for the older generations to come around to the idea. Today, all of the Haury family’s farmland is certified organic. 2024 marked the official transition to organic for all of the Haury’s citrus fields. They have a diverse crop of organic navels, bloods, cara caras, mandarins, valencias, pummelos, and pomegranates.

The Haury family is the largest grower of organic pummelos for Homegrown Organic Farms. The Haury’s pack the pummelos at their packing facility in Ivanhoe on a line that was specifically designed to run pummelos. January is an especially busy time at the Haury farm as citrus season peaks and Lunar New Year approaches. Citrus fruits, particularly pummelos, are traditionally gifted during Lunar New Year as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. While conventional pummelos once dominated the U.S. market, the Haury family has played a pivotal role in providing American consumers with fresh organic pummelos.
Organic Life on the Farm

“I really feel the enjoyment of seeing a crop grow and mature and develop nicely—doing a good job on raising a crop—it’s a great sense of accomplishment, and something that would be wonderful for my boys to be able to have as they grow older,” Greg said.

Homegrown Organic Farms is proud to partner with dedicated family farms like the Haury’s. Thanks to growers like them, we are able to enjoy delicious organic citrus and pomegranates! Keep an eye out for their organic pomegranates during the fall months and organic citrus varieties that are in season during the winter months. And when biting into that fresh fruit, remember the hard work and passion that went into growing it from tree to your table.
