Natur-Tec India and Bayer have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop compostable seedling cups, aiming to eliminate single-use plastics from nursery supply chains.

Natur-Tec, a subsidiary of Northern Technologies International Corporation and a specialist in compostable biopolymers, will contribute its materials science platform to the project. Bayer brings crop science expertise. Together, the partnership targets one of agriculture’s more persistent plastic waste problems: the disposable nursery cup.

The cups are designed to break down naturally within standard transplant cycles, removing the need for plastic disposal at the end of each growing round. The material is engineered to hold up during early seedling development, including when exposed to nematicides and fungicides, without compromising germination rates, root growth or seedling vigour.

Pilot trials will launch in vegetable and fruit nurseries across India, measuring germination, growth and yield outcomes. Both companies plan to scale the technology across India and into global markets following successful validation.

“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to developing practical and cost-effective solutions that benefit farmers and strengthen farming ecosystems,” said Simon Wiebusch, Country Divisional Head of Bayer’s Crop Science Division for India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Vineet Dalal, Vice President and Director of Global Market Development at Natur-Tec, said the collaboration goes beyond material substitution. “It’s about building nursery systems that work with nature rather than against it.”

Compostable biopolymers are increasingly attracting interest in agricultural applications, where products frequently contact soil and are difficult to recover for conventional recycling. A cup that degrades in place removes a logistical barrier as much as an environmental one.
