Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), a pioneer in plant-based materials, has announced the commercial availability of PLIANT™ PCS, a 100% bio-based, non-toxic, and plastic-free outsole compound designed for footwear manufacturing.

Traditional bio-based outsole materials have struggled to match the performance of synthetic rubber, often falling short in durability, traction, and mechanical strength. PLIANT™ PCS aims to bridge this gap, providing a sustainable alternative without sacrificing performance.

The new compound boasts tensile and tear strengths more than three times the highest standards in the industry, along with excellent abrasion resistance and grip in both wet and dry conditions.

Steve Zika, CEO of NFW, explained, “PLIANT™ PCS exceeds industry requirements in strength and grip, offering brands a natural, non-toxic solution that integrates seamlessly into existing supply chains. It eliminates the tradeoffs brands have faced when choosing bio-based materials, delivering top-tier performance.”

The compound is free from petrochemicals, toxic additives, and plastics, aligning with the growing demand for environmentally responsible products. NFW offers flexible integration options: brands can receive PLIANT™ PCS as bulk material for their own molding processes or opt for finished outsoles produced through NFW’s manufacturing network.

This flexibility facilitates easy adoption across diverse production models.

The launch was highlighted during FXPO, with NFW’s Global Sales Manager, Charlie Smith, speaking on plastic-free outsole solutions. PLIANT™ PCS is now available for brands and manufacturers worldwide.

This innovative material marks a significant step toward sustainable, high-performance footwear solutions.
