The Renewable Materials Conference will take place from 22 to 24 September in Siegburg, near Cologne, Germany, and online. Hosted by nova-Institute, this year’s event carries the theme “Defossilisation through Innovation.”

The conference centers on replacing fossil carbon with renewable alternatives. Industries like chemicals and plastics rely on carbon as a raw material. Unlike the energy sector, they cannot simply switch to solar or wind power. Instead, they can source carbon from biomass, captured COâ‚‚ or recycling. nova-Institute refers to this shift as defossilisation, a companion process to the energy sector’s decarbonisation.

The program includes 75 presentations and 20 panel discussions. A high-level evening panel on the first day will address industrial transformation amid overlapping global pressures. Organizers have also planned 17 workshops covering topics from lignin valorization to the biodegradation of plastics in agriculture and forestry. Due to demand, the event will run three workshop rooms simultaneously this year.

Attendees can visit 41 exhibition booths across two floors. Between 400 and 500 participants are expected, with matchmaking software and multiple networking events built into the schedule.

The conference will also present its “Renewable Material of the Year 2026” award, sponsored by Covestro. Six finalists will pitch their materials or technologies to attendees, who will then vote for a winner.

UPM Biochemicals is serving as platinum sponsor. Gold sponsors include Celluranics, GS Biomats, IFF, Leaf Biotech, L’Oreal and VERBIO. Several industry associations and research institutions are also supporting the event.
