CarbonQuest, a distributed carbon capture technology provider, has announced four significant milestones as it expands operations, including its first deployment in Canada and integration of advanced materials into its capture systems.

The company has partnered with Tourmaline Oil, one of Canada’s leading oil and gas producers, to install carbon capture technology on a natural gas compressor at Tourmaline’s Banshee facility near Edson, Alberta. It marks the first time CarbonQuest’s system has been used on natural gas compression engines.

The project brings together Canadian partner Cielo Carbon Solutions and New Zealand-based Captivate Technology. Notably, Captivate’s metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents will be integrated into the CarbonQuest capture unit for the first time, with the goal of optimizing the capture process and improving energy efficiency. Once captured, the COâ‚‚ will be transported via pipeline for permanent underground storage in Alberta.

Shane Johnson, CEO of CarbonQuest, said the company’s distributed carbon capture technology is well-suited for medium-sized applications like natural gas compressors at processing facilities. He described the project as an opportunity to expand the company’s North American presence.

The Alberta government is providing half of the project’s $4.1 million funding, demonstrating continued support for carbon capture and sequestration initiatives in the province. Johnathon Sipos, CEO of Cielo Carbon Solutions, thanked Emissions Reductions Alberta and the Natural Gas Innovation Fund for their backing.

Shane Telfer, CEO of Captivate Technology, emphasized the project’s importance in testing their proprietary MOF materials in a commercial environment, calling it the first step in developing MOF-based carbon capture projects with CarbonQuest.

Scott Volk, Director of Emissions and Innovation at Tourmaline, noted the company has been advancing carbon capture initiatives since 2021 as part of efforts to reduce emission intensity.
