P2 Science and Algenesis have announced a partnership aimed at developing and commercializing fully bio-based, biodegradable polyurethanes. The collaboration focuses on creating raw materials that do not rely on petrochemicals or toxic substances like phosgene.

P2 Science’s proprietary PIOz™ process converts oils derived from algae into chemical intermediates. Algenesis has recently commissioned a pilot plant for its Bio-Iso™ platform, which produces bio-based polyurethanes. Together, the companies are working to establish a new supply chain for these renewable materials.

The goal is to produce high-performance, biodegradable polyurethanes suitable for applications in footwear, apparel, coatings, adhesives, and consumer products. P2 is manufacturing algae-based azelaic acid at its plant in Connecticut. They will supply Algenesis with a key chemical for polyurethane production.

Oihana Elizalde, CEO of P2 Science, stated, “Our collaboration aims to support the transition away from petroleum-based materials by utilizing plant-based intermediates, combined with Algenesis’ polyurethane platform.”

Steve Mayfield, CEO of Algenesis, added, “Our focus is on replacing traditional plastics with plant-based materials that can safely degrade at the end of their life. Working with P2 allows us to incorporate new bio-based intermediates into our formulations while maintaining product performance.”

Both companies are working to scale production and make these renewable chemicals and materials more broadly available, supporting ongoing efforts to develop sustainable alternatives in various industries.
