Specialty coatings company Paramelt has launched Aquavate Bio, a water-based, biodegradable coating platform designed to give fiber-based packaging the barrier performance it needs to replace plastic, without sacrificing recyclability or compostability.

The platform is built around a range of synthetic, bio-based, and biodegradable polymer dispersions that can be used individually or blended into multi-layer structures. The focus is functional: delivering grease resistance, moisture barriers, and heat-sealability using existing coating lines and converting equipment, with no major capital investment required.

An early proof point came through a joint development with UPM Specialty Materials. Combining Aquavate Bio with UPM’s barrier base papers, the partners produced a recyclable food packaging concept for bakery, fast food, and convenience applications. The solution achieved strong grease resistance and heat-sealability at coating weights of just 4 to 6 grams per square metre, a level that even conventional fossil-based coatings can struggle to match. The concept is said to be certified recyclable under the Cepi/4evergreen v.2 standard.

Selected grades in the Aquavate Bio range offer home, industrial, and marine degradability, making the platform compatible with both recycling streams and organic waste pathways depending on local infrastructure.

Paramelt positions practical scalability as a defining feature. The company notes that brands and converters are not looking for laboratory concepts but for solutions deployable today, within current production setups.

The launch comes as coatings gain recognition as a critical factor in circular packaging design, particularly for paper replacing plastic in food applications where grease and moisture performance are non-negotiable. Paramelt says it is actively expanding the Aquavate Bio range to cover additional use cases across food, consumer goods, and industrial packaging.
