Solar energy continues to shine as one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity worldwide, with many countries seeing double-digit annual growth in solar installations.

This graphic showcases the state of global solar power installations, highlighting the top 15 countries by cumulative megawatts (MW) of installed photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) as of 2024 along with their annual growth rate of installations.

The data comes from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2025 report.

China Continues to Lead Solar Installations in 2024

China has once again widened its lead in global solar capacity. With 887,930 MW installed as of 2024, China is far ahead of any other country.

The table below shows data for the top 15 countries by installed solar capacity as of 2024, along with their annual growth rate:

Rank Country Installed solar (MW, 2024) Annual growth rate (2023-24)
1 🇨🇳 China 887,930 45.6%
2 🇺🇸 U.S. 177,470 27.5%
3 🇮🇳 India 97,384 33.7%
4 🇯🇵 Japan 91,610 2.8%
5 🇩🇪 Germany 89,943 20.1%
6 🇧🇷 Brazil 53,113 40.0%
7 🇪🇸 Spain 38,587 20.9%
8 🇦🇺 Australia 38,472 15.6%
9 🇮🇹 Italy 36,013 22.7%
10 🇰🇷 South Korea 26,645 13.4%
11 🇳🇱 Netherlands 24,048 13.0%
12 🇫🇷 France 21,528 23.7%
13 🇵🇱 Poland 20,199 23.0%
14 🇹🇷 Türkiye 19,883 76.1%
15 🇻🇳 Vietnam 18,667 0.4%

To put it in perspective, China’s solar capacity is now five times larger than the second-ranked United States, which reached 177,470 MW in 2024.

China also boasts some of the highest annual growth in solar installations at 45.6%, meaning it added 278,009 megawatts of solar capacity, more than any other country’s current amount of installed solar power.

In comparison, the U.S. also grew its installed solar energy by double digits at 27.5%, adding 38,265 MW in 2024.

Other Countries Growing Solar Power in 2024

Beyond China and the U.S., several countries are emerging as fast-growing solar markets, largely thanks to the 50%+ decline in solar electricity costs over the past decade.

India, now the third-largest solar market globally, expanded its capacity to 97,384 MW with a 33.7% annual growth rate.

Brazil jumped to 53,113 MW, recording a 40.0% increase in just one year. Solar is quickly becoming a cornerstone of Brazil’s energy matrix.

Türkiye had the most explosive relative growth among the top 15, increasing its capacity by 76.1% year-over-year to nearly 20 GW.

France and Poland also showed solid growth rates of 23.7% and 23.0%, respectively, indicating accelerating momentum in Europe.

By contrast, solar growth has plateaued in some mature markets. Japan added just 2.8% to its installed base, and Vietnam saw negligible growth at 0.4%.
