SABIC’s new PPS compounds insulate power modules for 800 V EV inverters

SABIC has introduced two grades of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) compounds built to insulate high-voltage power modules, including the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switching devices used in electric drive systems. The new LNP THERMOCOMP OFM76XXP and OFM76EXP compounds have the potential to be used in power modules for 800 V and higher traction inverters and fast chargers, as well as renewable energy systems and industrial automation such as robotics.

Both grades carry a comparative tracking index (CTI) of PLC 0, the highest CTI class, along with dielectric strength for electrical insulation and UL94 V0 flame retardancy down to a 0.4 mm wall thickness. SABIC says the compounds retain 90% of their strength and insulation capability after 1,000 hours of heat aging at 200° C. Compared with polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyphthalamide (PPA) materials, the company says they offer better dimensional stability and resistance to thermal shock, supporting thinner and lighter parts. They can also be molded in white or light colors so the QR codes printed on IGBTs stay visible.

PPS resins withstand continuous heat and resist tracking, the surface breakdown that can form conductive paths across an insulator at high voltage. Both properties matter in 800 V power electronics, where higher voltages and denser packaging stress the insulating materials.

The OFM76EXP grade offers enhanced laser-marking capability, adhesion to silicone-based sealants and crack resistance, and SABIC says it has the highest impact strength of the comparable materials.

Beyond IGBT module insulation base plates, SABIC lists potential uses in DC power transmission systems, high-voltage inverters and breakers, integrated busbar brackets and renewable energy infrastructure. Both grades are available globally.
