Sappi North America announced it is now delivering commercial products after completing Project Elevate. This $500 million project expanded and converted Paper Machine No. 2 (PM2) at the Somerset Mill in Maine. The project aims to meet rising demand for high-quality, fiber-based, sustainable packaging solutions.

Qualification processes are ongoing with several customers. Production will gradually increase to full volume by 2026. The investment doubles PM2’s production capacity and enhances Sappi’s position as a leader in sustainable packaging. It transforms Somerset into one of the most advanced sites for high-performance SBS (solid bleached sulfate) paperboard.

Michael Haws, President and CEO of Sappi North America, said: “This is a pivotal moment for us. We completed the largest rebuild in our history, doubling PM2’s capacity. Somerset now leads in sustainably manufactured paperboard. The true success lies in our people. Their focus, precision, and commitment to safety made this complex transformation possible while keeping the mill operational. This investment builds a foundation for innovation and sustainable growth.”

As production ramps up, the project will deliver 520,000 short tons (about 470,000 metric tons) of annual capacity. It allows Sappi to produce a full range of high-performance SBS paperboard grades, including folding cartons, food service boards, and cups. This positions Sappi North America as a full-service SBS provider, supporting both domestic and global packaging markets with high quality and consistency.

Steve Binnie, CEO of Sappi Limited, said: “This conversion is a major step forward in our global packaging strategy. It reflects our dedication to long-term growth and expanding our packaging solutions portfolio.”

With Project Elevate’s completion, Sappi reinforces its leadership in high-quality paperboard. It also demonstrates ongoing investment in U.S. manufacturing, innovation, and sustainable packaging’s future.
