Segway MAX G3 Plus First Impressions: They Really Surprised Us

Segway just surprised us with a faster, longer-range MAX G3. We unboxed it, rode it, and the fully tested review lands August 4.

We already named the regular Segway MAX G3 one of the best electric scooters under $1,500 in 2026.

Apparently, Segway was not finished with it.

The company surprised us with a brand-new version and basically said, “Hold on, let us cook.”

We now have the newly announced Segway MAX G3 Plus in the RiderGuide studio, and our first impressions and unboxing video is live. The full review is coming August 4, but after getting it out of the box and taking an initial ride, I can already tell that this is more than a new name or a small cosmetic update.

There are real upgrades throughout the scooter, including changes that I could immediately feel from the rider’s perspective. Segway says the Plus will go farther and faster than the standard model, along with several other major upgrades that we will cover once all the final details are public.

Where Does the MAX G3 Plus Fit?

The MAX G3 Plus sits right at the top of Segway’s mid-range electric scooter lineup.

Below it are Segway’s more affordable E-Series and F-Series commuter scooters. Above it are the much faster, larger, and heavier GT3 and GT3 Pro models.

That positioning could make the MAX G3 Plus especially interesting. It is designed for riders who want more performance and range than a typical commuter scooter, but do not necessarily want to move up to an 87-pound GT3 or the 50 mph GT3 Pro.

The MAX family is already one of the most recognizable commuter scooter lines in the world. It earned that reputation by focusing on reliability, low maintenance, weather resistance, and practical everyday performance rather than chasing the biggest motor numbers possible.

The G3 Plus appears to follow that same formula, just with the performance ceiling raised.

Improving an Already Excellent Scooter

The regular Segway MAX G3 was not exactly begging for a replacement.

It already came with a 2,000W peak rear motor, a claimed 28 mph top speed, a 597Wh battery, front and rear hydraulic suspension, dual disc brakes, and 11-inch self-sealing tubeless tires. Our scooter weighed 54.2 pounds, keeping it considerably lighter than Segway’s GT models.

It also included some of the best technology available on a commuter scooter, including a full-color TFT display, traction control, Apple Find My support, Segway AirLock, integrated turn signals, and extensive app-based settings.

That combination of power, ride quality, safety equipment, and technology is exactly why the standard MAX G3 became one of our favorite scooters under $1,500.

So when Segway told us it was making the scooter go farther, faster, and adding more upgrades throughout the platform, my immediate question was obvious:

There is no way it can still cost the same, right?

That would be kind of crazy.

When we filmed our first impressions video, the final launch details had not yet been announced. Segway has since confirmed that the MAX G3 Plus will officially launch on August 4 with the “same base price, higher standard.” Segway is also advertising up to $150 in preorder savings through its Mileage Club from August 4 through August 24.

Assuming that pricing holds without removing any important equipment, the MAX G3 Plus could become one of the most competitive mid-range scooters of the year.

First Ride Impressions

We are saving the detailed performance discussion for the full review, but the differences are not limited to a spec sheet.

There are upgrades that affect the way the scooter feels from the deck and handlebars. The MAX G3 Plus still feels unmistakably like a Segway MAX, which is a good thing, but it does not feel like Segway simply changed a software setting and added a Plus badge.

We will need more time on our test route before deciding how significant every change really is. Initial impressions can reveal a lot about build quality, ergonomics, throttle response, suspension feel, and general refinement, but they cannot replace controlled performance testing.

That is especially true when a manufacturer is promising more speed and range.

Segway Is Changing How It Tests Range

One of the most interesting parts of this launch has nothing to do with the physical scooter.

Segway is introducing a new range-testing method that it says will produce estimates much closer to what riders can expect in real-world conditions.

That would be a meaningful change.

Manufacturer range figures are traditionally produced under extremely favorable conditions, often with a light rider, low speeds, mild temperatures, flat terrain, and very limited stopping. Those numbers can be useful for comparing battery efficiency under controlled conditions, but they rarely represent the distance most people will travel during a normal commute.

We like the direction Segway is taking, but we are not simply going to accept a new claimed range because the testing terminology has changed.

We will compare Segway’s new estimate against our own real-world range test and see how closely the numbers actually line up. If the new method proves accurate, it could make shopping for electric scooters much easier and put pressure on other manufacturers to provide more realistic estimates.
