Who the MUXI PRO Is For (And Who Should Skip It)

Let’s save you some time. If you’re shopping for an off-road or high-speed ebike, the MUXI PRO isn’t your bike. The new front suspension fork is built for the occasional detour, not trail riding, and while it will hit 28 mph, you’ll be pedaling hard to get there. Throttle-only tops out at 20 mph. If speed is the goal, start with our best electric bikes guide instead.

But if you want a city cruiser with automatic shifting, smooth pedal assist, and a tech package that makes daily riding easier and safer, this is exactly the bike you’re looking for. It carries groceries in the front basket, takes a child seat on the rear rack, and fits in a hallway.

The 9-Speed Auto Shifter Is the Reason to Buy This Bike

This is the feature that separates the Pro from the standard MUXI, and it’s the reason to buy this bike.

The Pro runs nine gears with automatic shifting, and it’s genuinely good. Shifts are quick and quiet. No clunking, no hunting for the right gear, no lurching in your pedal stroke. The system reads your speed and assist level, finds the sweet spot, and settles there. Pulling away from a light or easing into a climb, you never think about gears again.

Your pedaling finally feels like it’s doing something instead of spinning for show. After a few rides you’ll stop noticing the shifts entirely, which is the highest compliment we can give it. It’s the difference between driving an automatic and a manual.

Under the skin it is a Segway 9-speed derailleur driven by a servo. Speed, cadence and a gyroscope that reads incline feed the shift logic, and the app lets you pick a Casual, Standard or Sport cadence target. We left it in Standard for the whole test and never wanted to touch it. It also drops to a low gear when you stop, so every start from a light is in the right gear.

Motor, Acceleration and Hill Climb (Tested)

The MUXI PRO runs the same 750W direct-drive motor as the standard MUXI, so acceleration and hill-climbing power are similar between the two. The Pro’s extra top speed (28 mph in Class 3 and hybrid mode) comes from the drivetrain, not the motor.

Where the difference shows up is in how pedaling feels. The base MUXI’s single-gear drivetrain is mostly for show. On the Pro, your input feels impactful and rewarding, and the motor stays whisper quiet doing it: 60 dB at full blast, compared to the 70 to 80 dB typical of other ebikes.

Acceleration

Acceleration is respectable. The bike ramps to 18 mph quickly, then takes its time crawling to 20 on throttle alone. Reaching the advertised 28 mph requires pedaling.

The throttle quirk you need to know about

Here’s the one behavior that caught us off guard. If you’re cruising above 20 mph under pedal power and squeeze the throttle, the bike doesn’t ignore you. The motor actively brakes and drags you back down to 20 mph, then holds you there. The throttle and the top end of this bike live in two separate worlds: under 20, the throttle is your friend; above 20, touching it scrubs all the speed you just earned. If you’re pedaling hard in Class 3, keep your thumb off it.

Hill climb test

On our quarter-mile uphill course, the MUXI PRO finished in about 52 seconds at an average of 18 mph. That’s middle-of-the-road for its class. Pedaling in Class 3 cut it to 42 seconds, but at the cost of being completely winded. Our advice: let the motor handle hills unless you want the cardio.

Segway MUXI PRO Range and Battery: What We Measured

The 48V 717Wh smart battery is removable, hot-swappable if you own multiples, and can be charged on or off the bike. A full charge from empty takes about 7 hours. One thing to note: the battery self-discharges down to 80% if left sitting unused for two days.

In our real-world range test (fastest mode, riding as hard as possible, 200+ lb payload) we squeezed out about 22.7 miles, averaging roughly 32 Wh per mile. That’s the extreme end of the envelope. Ride at a normal pace with less cargo and you should see considerably better numbers. Segway claims up to 73 miles, which assumes a low assist level and a light rider.

Brakes, Regen and Traction Control

The two-piston hydraulic brakes with 180 mm rotors are smooth when you’re just bleeding off speed and deliver full emergency stopping power when you need it. Lever effort is light, and between the large rotors and the fat-tire contact patch, the MUXI PRO stops very quickly for an 83 lb bike.

The direct-drive motor also makes it the only bike in its market with regenerative braking, recovering battery on descents. Add hill hold, anti-slip traction control, and downhill speed control, and this braking package sits above anything else in the category.

Ride Comfort and Handling

Ergonomics and fit

The seat adjusts from a low 30.5 inches up to 36 inches with a quick release. Handlebar height is also adjustable, but you’ll need tools. At 5’9″, we found the ergonomics just right and stayed comfortable on long rides.

It’s a step-through frame, though the stepover is a bit taller than usual at 20 inches because the battery sits in the downtube. That placement gives the bike a very low center of gravity, which pays off in stability and cornering. The pedals sit low enough that we scraped a foot on the ground while leaning hard into turns during spirited riding.

Weight and balance

At 70 lb without the battery and 83 lb with it on our scale, the MUXI PRO is about average for a modern ebike. Segway’s own figure is 82.2 lb. What isn’t average is Segway’s low-speed stability, balance, and smoothness. Even in the highest speed mode the bike feels composed and never jerky, and the way it handles U-turns and tight circles is close to magical.

Suspension

At cruising speed on pavement, the MUXI PRO is incredibly smooth thanks to the plush 70 mm front suspension fork and fat tires that soak up road chatter. For paved comfort, it earns an A+.

The hardtail rear is another story. You’ll want to stand up over bumps, because the rear end will launch you off the seat. In our vibration testing, the MUXI scored slightly worse than comparable bikes in its class. A suspension seatpost would go a long way here.

Lights and Safety Features

The headlamp puts out roughly 2,650 lux, the brightest stock headlight we’ve ever measured. Night visibility is a non-issue.

The rear light includes dedicated turn signals bright enough to see clearly in daylight. That’s our favorite safety feature on the bike. Plenty of brands advertise turn signals, but most are so dim you can barely tell they’re on.

Display, App, and Everyday Use

The screen is big, bright, and readable in direct sunlight. It shows power usage, turn signal status, traction control, navigation, and Bluetooth music controls. The annoyance: it defaults back to 20% brightness every time you restart the bike. Deeper settings and firmware updates require the app.

The MUXI PRO unlocks automatically as you approach using your phone’s Bluetooth and supports Apple Find My, so you can always locate it. It accepts cargo racks, a rear child seat, and leg guards. Its compact size makes storage easy.

Our one real gripe is the kickstand. It’s too short, so the bike leans over further than you’d expect and eats more floor space than it should.

Segway MUXI PRO Problems We Ran Into

Nothing broke and nothing failed. Five things will annoy you, and you should know about them before the box shows up.

The throttle scrubs speed above 20 mph. Touch it while pedaling in Class 3 and the motor brakes you back to 20. It is a software choice, and it is the one habit you have to unlearn.

The display forgets its brightness. Every restart drops it to 20 percent. In daylight you will bump it back up, every single ride.

The kickstand is too short. The bike leans further than it should and takes up more floor than an 83 lb bike needs to.

The battery drains itself on the shelf. Leave it two days and it settles to 80 percent. Charge the night before, not the week before.

No rear suspension. The fork handles the front. Anything sharp at the back goes straight through the saddle. A suspension seatpost fixes most of it for under $100.

Is the MUXI PRO Worth the Upgrade Over the Standard MUXI?

Yes. At $1,999, the MUXI PRO costs $300 more than the $1,700 base model. For that, you get suspension forks, dedicated turn signals, fenders, new colors (the black colorway looks fantastic), and the 9-speed auto shifter, which on its own is worth the upgrade. If you’re already spending $1,700, spend the extra $300.

The one case for the standard bike: you never pedal. If you ride the throttle everywhere at 20 mph, the gearbox does nothing for you, and the base MUXI carries the same motor, battery, brakes and security suite for less. Our standard MUXI review covers that bike in full.
