Syngenta Canada’s Incipio foliar insecticide with Plinazolin technology, for potato and fruit and vegetable crop applications, will be available for the 2027 season.

“Incipio brings something exciting to the market for potatoes and specialty crop growers as the only Group 30 with such a broad reach across crops and pests,” says Cheryl Trueman, Syngenta insecticide and fungicide technical lead for potato and specialty crops.

WHY IT MATTERS
Fruit and vegetable producers have limited options for insecticides as some usage has been limited recently.

Syngenta says the foliar insecticide delivers fast, broad-spectrum control of hard-to-manage pests in potatoes and specialty crops and provides another resistance-management option.

Trueman said Plinazolin, the novel active ingredient, “delivers high efficacy and residual control of target pests in a fast-acting, dependable formulation.”

Incipio is registered for potatoes, apples, brassica head and stem vegetables and leafy greens, pome and stone fruits and other horticulture products, to control a wide range of damaging pests.

Its durable formulation remains on the leaf surface where it is needed, providing long-lasting residual activity, UV stability, and two-hour rainfastness.

Resistance management

Incipio’s impact against Colorado potato beetle can be seen in as little as two days, and it eliminates common potato pests in their most damaging life stages, giving growers visible results. It also controls potato leafhoppers and suppresses European corn borer.

“For growers concerned about insecticide resistance in their horticulture crops, Incipio has no known cross-resistance to other modes of action, making it an excellent rotation partner with Syngenta insecticides such as Minecto Pro in potatoes and Agri-Mek SC in apples,” Trueman explained, adding that the Group 30 mode of action manages challenging pests, including populations with resistance to other modes of action.

It can also be used with Actara 240SC in potatoes and has no rotational restrictions with key crops such as wheat, corn, and most vegetables.

A new mode of Colorado potato beetle control could help potato farmers fend off the yield-inhibiting pest and avoid potential resistance.

Colorado potato beetle

Colorado potato beetles are a yield-inhibiting pest that overwinter at the field’s edge or in hedgerows, then emerge in spring to lay eggs on the underside of potato leaves. A single female could lay 400 eggs over four weeks, with the pest able to fly upwards of 1.5 kilometres. The larvae and adults feed on leaves, stems and, in severe infestations, on tubers, heavily impacting yields.

Although the University of Guelph is researching natural enemies to control Colorado potato beetles, Syngenta’s Incipio could offer immediate pest control.

Application rate varies with the crop and target pest, but Syngenta said, on average, a case of Incipio, in SC formulation, contains four .81 litre bottles, which cover 80 acres for Colorado potato beetle or 53 acres for European corn borer.

One case will also cover 80 acres of brassica crops or 53 acres of apples.

For specialty crops such as apples, cucurbits and brassicas, Incipio stops target pests from feeding within hours and provides up to 14 days of control.

In brassicas, it controls flea beetle, diamondback moth, imported cabbageworm and cabbage looper. In apples, Incipio provides a new mode of action for mite control, delivering fast-acting control across multiple life stages, including eggs.

The Group 30 insecticide offers broad tank-mix compatibility, with no known cross-resistance with other modes of action and no known resistance.
