Amazon’s growth increasingly extends beyond online retail. Amazon Web Services (AWS), digital advertising, and other businesses have helped diversify its revenue base and contributed significantly to profits.

That business mix also helps explain why Amazon is significantly more profitable than Walmart despite the two companies now generating nearly identical annual revenue.

The United States of Revenue

The U.S. accounts for 15 of the 30 companies in the ranking, including seven of the top 10. Beyond Amazon and Walmart, the country’s largest companies by revenue span healthcare, technology, energy, and finance.

UnitedHealth Group generates $448 billion in annual revenue, while tech giants Apple and Alphabet bring in $416 billion and $403 billion, respectively. Other major retailers also appear in the ranking, including Costco.

Combined, the strong showing for U.S. companies means North American firms generated 60% of the $10.5 trillion in total revenue represented by the world’s top 30 companies.

State-Owned Revenues in 2026

State Grid Corporation of China, an electricity utility and the world’s largest state-owned enterprise (SOE), generated $555 billion in revenue, more than any other non-U.S. company. However, State Grid is not the only SOE to appear among the world’s top 30.

Fellow Chinese firms China National Petroleum Corporation ($402 billion), Sinopec ($364 billion), and China State Construction Engineering Corporation ($290 billion) were all market leaders in their respective industries.

Outside of China, Saudi Aramco generated $446 billion in revenue, more than any other company in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa.
