Despite the popularity of recyclables, most plastics never make it to recycling, especially flexible ones. In the US, only 1% of flexible packaging is recycled, with under 4% in Europe. Conversely, compostable packaging offers a more effective path to sustainability by breaking down into soil-enriching nutrients, leaving zero waste behind. Encouragingly, over 37 million Americans and 600 cities now participate in food waste and compostable packaging programs, with community composting expanding nationwide.
