Singapore-based UMAMI Bioworks has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nippon Barrier Free to collaborate on developing next-generation marine ingredients. This partnership aims to bring innovative solutions to the cosmetics and supplements markets across Japan and 18 other countries.

Under this agreement, Nippon Barrier Free will act as UMAMI Bioworks’ sales and distribution partner for cosmetic and supplement ingredients. The partnership will enable the companies to introduce marine cell-based ingredients to a broader international audience.

Nippon Barrier Free specializes in creating functional materials from salmon, a nutrient-rich fish that benefits health, animals, and the environment. Their mission is to utilize salmon’s natural potential to promote health and happiness worldwide.

Together, UMAMI Bioworks and Nippon Barrier Free seek to pioneer sustainable marine ingredients. Their collaboration aims to expand ocean-inspired innovation for health, beauty, and wellness applications.

Although Japan has yet to establish a regulatory framework for novel foods, the government is working on regulations since late 2024. UMAMI Bioworks, which already sells its whitefish for pet food in the EU, is awaiting approvals for human consumption in several countries, including the UK, US, and Singapore.

The partnership will focus on providing consistent, scalable, and traceable marine ingredients, addressing supply chain issues and ethical concerns. Their first product will be animal-free polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), a compound with anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, traditionally derived from salmon sperm.

This collaboration represents a significant step toward expanding sustainable, innovative marine ingredients for use in personal care, nutraceuticals, and more.
