The University of Massachusetts Amherst has launched a $120 million Future of Food Initiative. The bio-focused program will fund new research facilities and accelerate biomanufacturing and interdisciplinary bioscience solutions to global food system challenges.
Funding comes from four tranches of $30 million each. Contributors include PBM Capital CEO Paul Manning and his wife Diane, the state of Massachusetts, the university itself, and additional funds to be raised by the UMass Amherst Foundation. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said the initiative brings researchers and biotech partners together to tackle major food system challenges.
A central piece of the plan is the 36,000 square foot Paul and Diane Manning Food Innovation Hub, expected to break ground in late 2027. The biofacility will house sensory testing labs, innovation kitchens, a food grade biomanufacturing pilot plant, a clinical testing lab and collaborative bioresearch labs.
The university will also establish a Center for the Future of Food. The center will connect faculty in food bioscience, nutrition and agricultural biotechnology with the translational research infrastructure of the Institute of Applied Life Sciences. Together, they will explore novel bio-based foods, biomanufacturing, food safety, precision nutrition and sustainable biological production systems.
Mike Fox, dean of the College of Natural Sciences, said the university aims to lead the nation in biotech-driven solutions for food production and health. The investment will also fund endowed professorships, a food science chair and a catalyst fund for long-term bioinnovation.
The initiative adds to Massachusetts’ growing biotech and biofood-tech ecosystem, which already includes Tufts University’s Center for Cellular Agriculture. This adds to the 2024 state pledge of $2.2 billion for climate tech and alternative proteins.
