The faster Voyager is subscription only, starting at $79 a month and dropping to $55.30 on an annual plan with service and warranty included. Neither is a long-distance scooter. Unagi claims 12 miles of range on the Classic and 25 on the Voyager.

What $399 Actually Buys

The knock on Unagi was always the price, never the product. That argument is over.

Unagi sells refurbished Model One Classics for $399. List was $990. Units ship with new batteries, and you still pick a color, which is more choice than most brands offer at any price.

At $399 the Classic stops competing with premium scooters and starts competing with entry-level ones. Your usual $399 machine runs a single motor, weighs north of 40 pounds, folds in two stages, and rolls on pneumatic tires waiting to strand you. The Classic is dual motor, 26.5 pounds, one-click fold, solid tires. In practice that is not a close comparison.

Where Unagi Was Ahead of the Curve

Dual motors came years early. Unagi put a motor in each wheel back when two motors meant a heavy performance machine. In a 26.5-pound frame that second motor changes how the scooter behaves: hills that stall a single-motor commuter barely register, the launch is instant, and you get braking force at both ends. Most of the market is only now pushing dual motors down into lightweight commuters.

The fold is still the best part. One click. No thumb screws, no collar to fight, no crouching in the rain. If your commute has a train or an elevator in it, that beats extra range.

Thumb regen braking is the feature riders notice immediately. A paddle under your thumb gives smooth, modulated deceleration, recovers a little energy, and keeps the mechanical brakes from wearing out.

Solid tires with air pockets cost you some ride softness. You also never patch a tube on a sidewalk or push a dead scooter home. Ask anyone who has done the second one which trade they would take.

Then there is color. Sounds trivial right up until you park a Cool Mist or a Latte next to a row of identical matte-black slabs.

The Voyager Went Subscription Only

The Voyager is the better scooter. Roughly double the claimed range, more power, faster charging. You cannot buy one.

It lives on Unagi All-Access now. A rolling month runs $79. Three months drops it to $67.15, six months to $63.20, and a 12-month commitment to $55.30. Unagi covers service and warranty the whole time and ships it free.

Twelve months at $55.30 is about $664 for a scooter you will never own. That number looks bad until you price out owning one instead.

Flats are not an if, they are a when, and a rear tire on most scooters means pulling motor cables, or $80 at a shop if you can find one that services your brand. Add brake adjustments, folding wear and battery fade, then the resale hassle at the end. Real ownership cost climbs well past the sticker.

The subscription rolls all of it into one line item. If it breaks, it is Unagi’s weekend, not yours.

Employer benefits are the part most riders miss. If your company runs a commuter benefits account or a transportation stipend, a flat monthly fee is exactly the expense those programs were built for, and paying with pre-tax dollars takes real weight off that $55.30.

Classic vs Voyager

The gap that matters is range, not speed. Both cap at 20 mph, so the Voyager is not the faster scooter in traffic. It is the one that goes twice as far and charges in under half the time.

Who Should Skip a Unagi

Range is the first disqualifier. Unagi claims 12 miles on the Classic and 25 on the Voyager, and claimed numbers run optimistic across this entire industry. In practice, if you commute eight miles each way, look elsewhere. Our claimed vs tested range data covers how wide that gap usually runs.

Rough pavement is the second. Solid tires and small wheels punish broken asphalt, and the ride gets old fast on a bad street.

Both models top out at 20 mph. Plenty for a bike lane. Not enough if you were hoping to keep pace with traffic. If any of that rules Unagi out, start with our best electric scooters shortlist instead.
