Carbon-free electricity is now flowing to the University of Dayton from a first-of-its-kind waste-heat-to-power project. The initiative will cover all of the university’s electricity needs.
The project comes from a 15-year power purchase agreement. It involves the University of Dayton, AES Ohio and Tallgrass, with Kanin Energy serving as Tallgrass’ development partner.
Tallgrass operates a waste-heat recovery system connected to a natural gas compressor station in Washington Court House, Ohio. The system captures heat that would otherwise be lost during pipeline operations. That heat is converted into carbon-free electricity.
AES Ohio then purchases the power. It routes that electricity specifically to the University of Dayton through its local distribution system. The arrangement doesn’t shift costs to other AES Ohio customers.
Construction began in October 2024. The system was completed in early 2026.
Steven Davidson of Tallgrass called the project a model for how energy infrastructure can do more. He said it turns an everyday part of pipeline operations into carbon-free power.
Dan Fipke of Kanin Energy said the project shows what’s possible when existing infrastructure meets real demand. He called it a scalable path for industrial decarbonization.
University of Dayton President Eric Spina linked the project to the school’s mission of environmental stewardship. He said it also gives students hands-on opportunities in clean energy research and workforce preparation.
The system is expected to generate about 78,000 megawatt-hours of carbon-free electricity each year. That’s projected to cut roughly 55,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Overall, it should reduce UD’s carbon footprint by 71%.
The project also points to broader potential. Waste-heat-to-power technology could apply across industries like natural gas processing, refining, cement, steel and chemicals, tapping into a largely unused source of clean power.
