Velotric Discover M First Look: The Discover Goes Mid-Drive

Velotric’s first mid-drive commuter puts a 100 Nm VeloCore motor and an 801.6Wh battery on a comfort-focused step-through frame, and early testers say it rides well above its price.

Velotric built its name on affordable hub-drive commuters like the Discover line. The Discover M breaks that pattern. It is the brand’s first mid-drive, and it drops an in-house 100 Nm VeloCore motor into a step-through commuter along with a Shimano CUES 9-speed drivetrain and a battery north of 800Wh. We got our first look at the claimed specs and the early hands-on reviews. Here is what stands out before we run one through our full test loop.

What’s new with the Discover M

The big story is the motor. Every Discover before this one used a rear hub. The Discover M switches to a VeloCore mid-drive that puts power through the crank, so it feeds torque through the gears instead of a single fixed hub ratio. That means 100 Nm of claimed torque, real climbing muscle, and a drivetrain that can actually make use of it. Velotric pairs it with a Shimano CUES 9-speed cassette, an air fork, a suspension seatpost, and an Auto Mode that adjusts assist on its own using a 6-axis motion sensor.

It comes as a step-through only, in Platinum Silver or Olivine Green, with fenders and a rear rack pre-installed. Like the rest of the current Velotric range, it carries UL 2849 and UL 2271 safety certification, a torque-or-cadence SensorSwap setup, and app support with over-the-air updates and Apple Find My. It is a commuter first, but a much more capable one than the hub-drive Discover bikes.

Claimed specs and price

The Discover M lists at $2,499 and is in stock at that price. Everything below is manufacturer-claimed unless we say otherwise. We have not put this bike on our scale or through our range loop yet.

Mid-drive motor and performance

The VeloCore mid-drive is the reason to look at this bike. It is rated at 500W nominal and 960W peak, with 100 Nm of claimed torque. A mid-drive sends its power through the chain and cassette, so it multiplies torque as you drop into lower gears. That is why mid-drives climb better than hub motors of similar wattage. On the Discover M that torque runs through a Shimano CUES 9-speed with an 11-46T range, so you have a proper low gear for hills and a tall one for cruising.

Electric Bike Report, which got early hands-on time, said the Discover M “punches well above its price point.” Auto Mode is the other piece worth calling out. It uses a 6-axis IMU to read grade and rider effort and adjusts assist for you, so you are not constantly tapping the buttons. Top speed lands at up to 28 mph across Class 1, 2, and 3, so you can set it up for pedal assist only or add throttle depending on your local rules.

Battery and claimed range

The Discover M carries an 801.6Wh battery, bigger than the 730Wh pack in the Discover 3. Velotric claims up to 95 miles on a charge. That is a best-case number in the lowest assist mode, so treat it as a ceiling, not an average. Electric Bike Report measured a wide spread in its testing, from 32.3 miles in the hardest-working mode up to 81.2 miles when riding easy. That gap is normal for a mid-drive commuter, and it tells you the real figure depends heavily on how much help you ask for.

One useful detail for existing owners: the Discover M battery interchanges with the Discover 2 after a firmware update, so a spare pack can move between the two. We will post our own tested range once we get a unit on our standard loop.

Discover M vs Discover 3

This is the cross-shop that matters, and it comes down to motor type and money. The Velotric Discover 3 is the hub-drive commuter at $1,999. It runs a 750W rear hub with 75 Nm of torque, a 730Wh battery, and an 8-speed drivetrain. The Discover M costs $500 more and swaps that hub for the 100 Nm VeloCore mid-drive, adds the bigger 801.6Wh battery, the Shimano CUES 9-speed, and Auto Mode. Weight is nearly identical at 60 versus 61 pounds. Pick the Discover 3 to save money on a proven hub commuter. Pick the Discover M for more torque, more gears, more range on paper, and the self-adjusting ride.

Who should buy the Discover M

First-look verdict

On paper, the Discover M is the most capable commuter Velotric has built. Moving to a mid-drive gives it the torque and gearing that a hub bike cannot match, and the big battery, air fork, and Auto Mode round it out as a genuine daily rider. The catch is price. At $2,499 it asks $500 over the Discover 3, so the question is whether the mid-drive is worth it to you. Early impressions are strong, with Electric Bike Report saying it punches above its price, but we still want to put our own numbers to the range and climbing claims. If you want a torquey, comfort-focused commuter and the budget stretches, this one belongs on your shortlist. We will update this review with full tested figures once we get a unit in.
