Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay! This  year’s focus is “Plastic pollution is a problem we can fix.”

Researchers at Hope College are studying sources of plastic pollution in our local streams and lakes. These studies include examining roadside litter, which is a potential source of waste in our waterways, and charting how plastic litter changes as it moves in streams and storm drains. While the sources of litter can vary locally, much plastic waste floats.  Over time plastic can be carried from local sources into Lake Michigan, then into the St. Lawrence Seaway and into the Atlantic Ocean, such that our local litter may be contributing to a global problem. The Trash Trout is currently being utilized in Paw Paw Park and is capturing floating waste so that researchers can examine what litter moves, and under what conditions.  #sustainablehope #hopesustains

“Plastic pollution permeates every corner of the planet—even in our bodies in the form of microplastics. World Environment Day 2025 calls for collective action to tackle plastic pollution. By drawing inspiration from nature and showcasing real-world solutions, the campaign will encourage individuals, organizations, industries, and governments to adopt sustainable practices that drive systemic change.” https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/
