ZymoChem, a biotechnology company focused on creating sustainable materials for everyday products, has announced a new partnership with the Agile BioFoundry (ABF). The ABF is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO).

Through this collaboration, ZymoChem aims to improve its research on bio-adipic acid, a key ingredient used to produce bio-nylon 6,6. The partnership will leverage ABF’s expertise and resources to accelerate development and optimize production processes.

ABF is a consortium of U.S. National Laboratories dedicated to advancing industrial biomanufacturing of fuels and chemicals. These government-funded labs provide cutting-edge research tools, helping private companies improve yields and scale their technologies more efficiently.

Dr. Jorge Alonso-Gutierrez, ZymoChem’s Associate Director of Biology, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support. “Thanks to the DOE and national labs, we can develop bio-nylon more efficiently and contribute to the growth of the global bioeconomy,” he said.

The collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in California is supported by $250,000 in research funding from the DOE. The project will focus on using proteomics and machine learning to develop a microbial host for bio-adipic acid production.

This 24-month effort aims to bring ZymoChem’s next specialty chemical closer to commercialization. Dr. Héctor Garcia Martín from LBNL highlighted the importance of this work, noting that advanced analysis will support widespread use of these materials.

By harnessing innovative research tools, ZymoChem’s partnership with the national labs is set to speed up the development of sustainable, bio-based materials for a greener future.
