Summary: Our new place has a little backyard (a first for us!), and I knew as soon as we signed our lease, I wanted to create a space that felt like a true extension of our home for the warmer months ahead. The Cruz Outdoor Double Sofa ($899) from Joybird has clean lines, durable materials, and cozy cushions, and it’s quickly become our favorite place for morning coffee or to unwind after a long day!

What I Love:

  • FSC-Certified Eucalyptus: The Cruz Outdoor Double Sofa is crafted with sustainably sourced eucalyptus wood, chosen for both its durability and eco-friendly credentials. It’s built to last, and it’s better for the planet, too.
  • UV-Resistant Cushions: These cushions are seriously comfy, supportive without being stiff, and wrapped in a weather-resistant fabric that stands up to sun, spills, and fading—a must-have for outdoor lounging.
  • Small-Space Friendly: The compact size is ideal for small patios, balconies, or city living. It’s perfect for solo reading sessions, weekend coffee with my husband, or even hauling up a few stairs if you’re in an apartment.
  • Fair Pricing + Flexible Options: While it’s more of an investment than a secondhand find or something from Ikea, the Cruz offers excellent value for sustainably made, long-lasting outdoor furniture ($899). Bonus: It comes with a limited warranty and financing options.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Cushions Aren’t Fully Waterproof: They’re moisture-resistant, not waterproof—so we play it safe by bringing them in or tossing on a cover when heavy rain’s in the forecast. It’s a small effort to keep them looking great.
  • It’s a Sofa, Not a Full Setup: Because the Cruz is on the smaller side, you might want to round things out with chairs, a side table, or a coffee table—especially if you’re hosting. It’s a great starting point, but it shines even more when styled as part of a complete setup.

There’s something undeniably charming about a compact outdoor space—especially when it’s strung with string lights and decorated with big pots overflowing with lush plants. When we moved into our rental this past winter, the yard was overrun with weeds and more “forgotten corner” than secret garden. Still, I could see its potential and —rental or not— I was determined to make it our own before the summer heat rolled in.

Here in Southern California, outdoor living isn’t just a luxury—it’s survival. Especially near the coast, where central air conditioning is rare and indoor spaces can turn stuffy fast, outdoor space becomes essential, whether it’s a small balcony, a side yard, or a shady corner out back to escape the August temps—popsicle in hand, of course. And if there’s one thing I can’t resist when creating an outdoor oasis, it’s cozy, well-designed lounge furniture (where else am I supposed to read!?). That’s why, after hours of work laying pavers and creating space for a garden, I was so excited to add a Joybird outdoor couch to our patio, especially as the brand has just launched a sustainable outdoor collection.

Joybird’s Birch Outdoor Sectional is made with FSC-certified eucalyptus.

    About Joybird

You might know Joybird for its iconic sofas and sectionals, but the brand has grown into a full-fledged home destination, offering everything from dining tables and media consoles to beds, lighting, and thoughtful decor. Headquartered in Los Angeles, Joybird is redefining traditional furniture retail by delivering customizable, design-forward pieces made with care and craftsmanship, without the usual showroom markups.

Rooted in mid-century modern design, Joybird’s style feels both timeless and livable—made for real homes, not just the pages of a design magazine. Their latest evolution? A sustainable outdoor furniture line that doesn’t compromise on aesthetics or durability. The new Birch and Cruz collections are crafted from FSC-certified eucalyptus, a naturally resilient wood that stands up to the elements far better than the disposable seasonal sets you’ll find at big-box stores.

What impresses me most is how Joybird continues to innovate with responsibly sourced materials and meaningful partnerships, like their work with One Tree Planted to help offset environmental impact. I was especially excited to bring the new Cruz Outdoor Sofa into our patio space—it’s a beautiful example of form, function, and sustainability coming together. Read on for my review!

Reviewing The Cruz Outdoor Double Sofa

We chose this sofa for its compact yet stylish design. Since our patio isn’t huge—and we’re planning to add a bistro table and a bunch of planters this summer—I wanted something that felt cozy and inviting for a weekend cocktail or morning coffee, without overwhelming the space.

The couch arrived in a single box (yes, just one!) and weighed under 20 pounds. Its dimensions are 61.81″ L x 32.28″ W x 20.47″ H, making it ideal for small patios, apartment balconies, or any space-conscious setup. While Joybird offers premium home delivery—where a team brings your furniture inside, unpacks it, and hauls away the packaging—we opted for garage delivery since we were still laying pavers and finishing landscaping. I’m glad we did. It allowed us to see how simple assembly is (spoiler: very easy), and breaking down the packaging ourselves wasn’t a hassle—it was just one box and some protective plastic around the cushions.

Now for the good stuff: the couch itself. The frame is crafted from FSC-certified eucalyptus wood and finished with woven rope detailing along the arms and back. It’s smooth to the touch (no splinters!), and the cushions strike the right balance between firm support and comfort. They come in a soft, creamy neutral and are wrapped in a weather-resistant fabric designed to resist fading and UV damage. While I’d normally be cautious about a light fabric outdoors, Joybird shares some helpful care tips—and I plan to grab a protective cover for rainy days and winter months.

And the cute throw pillows? Total Facebook Marketplace score.

    Final Thoughts

The Cruz is the sweet spot if you’re looking to upgrade your outdoor setup without diving headfirst into bulky wicker or cold, clunky aluminum. It’s designed with real life in mind—clean lines, comfy cushions, and materials that hold up outside. Yes, it’s on the smaller side, but it’s perfect for flipping through a book or snuggling up under the stars with your favorite person (or pup).

I’m planning to add a couple of chairs and maybe a little coffee table to turn this corner into more of a conversation zone when friends come over—but honestly, I’m already so happy with the cozy foundation Joybird helped us create.

And with a baby arriving this summer, this will become our go-to spot to escape the heat, breathe in some fresh air, and sip (chug?) way too many cups of coffee after those inevitable sleepless nights.

A beige outdoor sofa with striped pillows sits on a rug next to a small table with a lamp and potted plants, against a backdrop of a green ivy-covered fence.
