The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is pleased to announce the launch of its newly upgraded greenhouse gas (GHG) calculation tools — the Biofuel and Biomass RSB GHG Tool and the RCF and RFNBO RSB GHG Tool— marking a major milestone in the support RSB provides to stakeholders working to assess and reduce emissions in complex sustainability landscapes.
These expert Excel-based tools have been upgraded to ensure alignment with the latest regulatory requirements, and to improve functionality and user experience. With the introduction of two distinct tools – one for biofuels and biomass, and another for recycled carbon fuels (RCFs) and renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) – RSB is meeting the increasing complexity of sustainability pathways with clarity and technical rigour.
The tools are built to support emissions calculations across key RSB certification schemes, including:
Each tool is grounded in the GHG methodologies defined by the RSB standards and integrates the latest datasets from Ecoinvent v3.11 and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2021) — providing a robust and user-friendly experience for certification bodies, auditors, and operators.
“These new GHG Tools are a direct response to the needs of our community. Building on the credibility of our globally recognised sustainability framework, we’ve worked closely with experts and tool users to ensure the updated GHG Tools are technically rigorous, aligned with evolving policies, and accessible for various use cases – from feasibility studies to RSB certification and audits,” said Beatriz Garcia Navarro, RSB Standards Manager.
Highlights of the upgrade include:
- Expanded calculation pathways for co-processing, flexible allocation, RCFs, and RFNBOs
- Updated emissions factors and methodology alignment
- Enhanced usability and navigation
- Dedicated tools to simplify use and reduce complexity
- Improved guidance and supporting documentation
The updated tools are available under a new annual licensing model, with reduced rates for selected user groups.
