The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) officially launched its flagship World Cities Report 2026: The Global Housing Crisis – Pathways to Action at the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13). The report calls for urgent, rights-based systemic changes to counter a rapidly escalating global housing emergency driven by climate change, conflict, and economic inequality.
Expert Insights from the Urban KAN Network
The formulation of this landmark report benefited from extensive global cross-disciplinary collaboration. During the drafting and review process, UN-Habitat drew on the expertise of Dr. Ayyoob Sharifi and Dr. Taibat Lawanson, prominent members of the Urban Knowledge-Action Network (Urban KAN). Their critical insights into urban resilience, community inclusivity, and climate adaptation provided a strong scientific and policy foundation for the report’s core chapters on informal settlement upgrading and climate-resilient housing.
“This report is highly timely as it addresses a global housing crisis affecting nearly 3 billion people lacking adequate housing. Released at a critical moment, it outlines urgent pathways for governments and stakeholders to advance climate-resilient and affordable housing amid rapid urbanization, climate change, and rising economic pressures.” said Prof. Dr. Ayyoob Sharifi, Urban Knowledge-Action Network Advisory Group member.
A Stark Reality and Strategic Pathways
- The Scale of the Deficit: Globally, 3.4 billion people lack access to safe and adequate housing, while over 1.1 billion reside in slums and informal settlements.
- Diversified Housing Models: The report urges governments to look beyond traditional homeownership, recommending the expansion of affordable rental housing, housing cooperatives, and community-led initiatives.
- Climate Resilience and Inclusion: Upgrading vulnerable communities against extreme weather events and fully integrating displaced populations into urban frameworks are highlighted as urgent priorities.
UN-Habitat emphasizes that there is no single solution to the housing crisis. Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) depends entirely on coordinated action between global expert networks like Urban Knowledge-Action Network, local governments, and civil society.
