The North American Manure Expo hits Wauseon, OH in one month. With two packed days of on- and off-site demos, tours and education sessions, the Manure Expo aims to showcase the latest and most relevant in manure research – especially all that’s been accomplished on Northwest Ohio and the surrounding area.

Today, we’re showcasing just a few of the speakers who will be sharing their knowledge of agronomy, safety, water quality and the latest manure and nutrient management research coming from the area, on day two of the Expo. Continuing education credits are available.

Manure Expo Speakers (Part 1)

Daniel Andersen

Daniel Andersen, also known as “@DrManure”, is an associate professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University and a statewide manure management extension specialist. His work focuses on the intersection of manure management, water quality and sustainable livestock systems. He leads research and outreach programs that help producers and advisors optimize nutrient use through improved manure application strategies, cover crop integration and system-level thinking.

Daniel’s session, Cover crops and manure timing interaction shapes crops performance, will be held at 9:00 a.m. in Tent 4.

Erin Scott

Erin is a PhD student in public policy at the University of Arkansas, specializing in agricultural and natural resources. Her work focuses on evaluating the economic impacts of manure management strategies and understanding economic and environmental tradeoffs to help inform decision-making by producers and resource managers.

Erin’s session, Dairy and swine manure management decision tools: Optimizing nutrients, economics and environment, will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Tent 1.

Fred Whitford

Fred Whitford has served as director of the Purdue Pesticide Program since 1991. He has authored more than 300 publications including nine books and 150 extension bulletins, and delivered 6,700 presentations. Awards and recognitions include the Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to Rural People of Indiana, and Honorary Master Farmer by Indiana Prairie Farmer and the Purdue University College of Agriculture.

Fred will be hosting two sessions: More to using hitch pins than you might imagine at 9:00 a.m. and Securing equipment and products on trailers with straps and chains, at 9:30 a.m., both in Tent 3.

Greg LaBarge

Greg LaBarge is a field specialist in agronomic systems and a professor at Ohio State University Extension, Columbus. His research interests primarily relate to nutrient management impacts on crop production and water quality.

Greg’s session, Getting the greatest agronomic benefit from manure applied nutrients, will be held at 8:00 a.m. in Tent 2.

Kip Studer

Kip Studer is the conservation programs manager with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. He holds a master’s degree in crop science from the University of Illinois and is a graduate of Bowling Green State University. Studer is a certified crop adviser and certified conservation planner.

Kip’s session, an update on the H2Ohio water quality initiative, will be held at 8:30 a.m. in Tent 2.

Samuel Mullins

Sam graduated from The Ohio State University with a BSc in agricultural engineering and is a licensed professional engineer in Ohio. He has been employed at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) for 10 years, all with DLEP (chief of DLEP since 2019). He is originally from Preble County, OH and now resides in Licking County with his family.

Samuel’s session, Overview of ODA’s Division of Livestock environmental permitting, will be held at 8:30 a.m. in Tent 3.

Will Osterholz

Will Osterholz is research soil scientist at the USDA-ARS Soil Drainage Research Unit in Columbus, OH. He is currently investigating relationships between in-field soil health and edge-of-field water quality, as well as the contributions of legacy soil phosphorus sources to phosphorus losses from agricultural landscapes.

Will’s session, Manure in Ohio: Improved soil health, some increases to phosphorus loss, will be held at 9:00 a.m. in Tent 2.
