A significant next step in the collaboration with Looop: the development of a joint PHA production plant

Two years ago, we announced a shared ambition with LOOOP to jointly explore the production of PHA from organic side streams. Now, that ambition is being realised.  We are taking a significant next step in our collaboration: the development of a joint PHA production plant.

“This is a crucial step forward in our joint ambition to accelerate the production of PHA from secondary feedstock. By transforming organic side streams into high-quality biopolymers, we can help reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics and contribute to a sustainable future,” said João Sousa, Paques Biomaterials.

This first-of-its-kind facility, to be located in Emmen, marks a major milestone in the transition toward a circular and bio-based economy. The initiative, known as the PRECEDING project, is supported by the TSE – Industrie Studies program from RVO, which enables us, as partners, to carry out a comprehensive conceptual design.

With the insights gained from this study, we will establish a robust business case to advance the realisation of the plant. Once operational, the facility will bring to market a natural, safe, and sustainable alternative to conventional plastics—turning waste into value and creating a future without harmful microplastics.

“Our collaboration shows the power of partnership. What began as a shared vision two years ago is now taking shape as a groundbreaking facility in Emmen—proof that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand,” added Paul Slits, CEO, Looop.

By combining expertise, commitment, and vision, we, as partners, are setting a powerful example of how collaboration can accelerate the shift to renewable materials and reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics.
