World Fuel Services, a subsidiary of World Kinect, has helped facilitate one of the first commercial biofuel bunkerings for a cruise vessel in Greece. Norwegian Viva received a waste-based marine fuel blend in Piraeus, marking a significant step toward sustainable shipping. The operation was coordinated by World Fuel, in cooperation with Greek supplier EKO, demonstrating international teamwork to reduce maritime emissions.

This pioneering bunkering extends Norwegian Cruise Line’s biofuel program across Southern Europe. It is part of the company’s Sail & Sustain strategy, which aims to integrate low-carbon solutions into its fleet. The operation builds on previous biofuel trials in Gibraltar, Copenhagen, and the ARA region, reinforcing Norwegian’s commitment to sustainability.

Kimberly Westmoreland of World Fuel said, “This collaboration shows that certified alternative fuels are accessible today. Our global supply network and local partners help operators make real progress in decarbonization.”

Lory Urdaneta, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Senior Director of Energy Strategy, added, “The Piraeus biofuel operation reflects our ongoing efforts to scale lower-carbon solutions while maintaining quality guest experiences. Working with World Fuel and EKO accelerates our sustainability goals across new regions.”

Chrisanthopoulos Konstantinos from EKO highlighted Greece’s market readiness, stating, “Supplying waste-based biofuels locally demonstrates the Mediterranean’s potential for wider adoption.”

As the energy transition advances, collaborations like this show how alliances can deliver measurable progress today. By coordinating supply, supporting certification, and ensuring operational reliability, World Fuel helps ship operators worldwide access sustainable fuels at the right time.
