Perca has announced the start of a pioneering trial using vermifiltration technology to treat seafood processing waste, particularly from shrimp production. This nature-based wastewater treatment offers a sustainable alternative aligned with the seafood industry’s focus on environmental responsibility and energy efficiency.

Partially funded by grants, the project brings together industry and environmental experts, including representatives from Oregon State University, the West Coast Seafood Processors Association, the Oregon Wildlife Foundation, and seafood companies like Bornstein Seafoods and Russ Davis of Perca, Inc.

Vermifiltration employs earthworms and beneficial microbes to naturally break down organic waste in wastewater. Unlike traditional mechanical or chemical systems, it requires minimal energy and produces few or no harmful byproducts. The process converts waste into reusable water and nutrient-rich byproducts, supporting sustainability and ecosystem health.

Russ Davis, CEO of Perca, Inc., stated that the technology mimics nature’s processes. He explained that using worms and microbes reduces energy use, minimizes environmental impact, and creates a closed-loop system supporting coastal ecosystems.

The trial is being conducted at Bornstein Seafoods in Astoria, where researchers are testing vermifiltration on nutrient-rich shrimp wastewater. Results will help assess the scalability of this eco-friendly technology for other seafood processing operations.

Angee Hunt from Oregon State University emphasized the importance of collaboration. She highlighted that combining science and industry insights could lead to cleaner, more resilient seafood processing practices.

Lori Steele from the West Coast Seafood Processors Association added that this project demonstrates the industry’s commitment to sustainable innovation. Vermifiltration’s low operational costs and natural treatment make it a promising solution for coastal processors seeking environmentally friendly wastewater management.

Tim Greseth from the Oregon Wildlife Foundation noted that such initiatives protect local waters and wildlife, showing how science, industry, and conservation can work together for environmental progress.
