City University of Hong Kong’s School of Energy and Environment (SEE) and global infrastructure firm AECOM have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formalising a partnership aimed at advancing Hong Kong’s sustainability and climate resilience goals.
The agreement was officiated by Ir Dr Otto Poon, founding chairman of the Hong Kong Climate Change Forum. It sets the stage for joint research in climate adaptation, environmental innovation and sustainable infrastructure, and includes plans to explore a dedicated AECOM-SEE joint laboratory. The partnership will also support student internships, capacity building and academic co-supervision.
“By uniting CityUHK’s renowned research capabilities with our technical excellence, we can fast-track the development of resilient, future-ready solutions for Hong Kong,” said Dr Johnny Cheuk, AECOM’s Hong Kong Executive Leader.
Prof. Benjamin Horton, Dean of CityUHK SEE, echoed that sentiment. He said partnerships between academia and industry are essential for scaling innovation and turning research into real-world impact.
Following the signing, the two organisations co-hosted a Climate Change Symposium bringing together government, industry and academic voices. Discussions covered coastal resilience, sustainable water management and climate risk disclosure. Speakers included representatives from the HKSAR Development Bureau, Henderson Land Development and several CityUHK and AECOM specialists.
The collaboration reflects a broader push to close the gap between laboratory research and on-the-ground climate solutions. With Hong Kong facing mounting environmental pressures, both organisations say the partnership is designed to deliver practical, scalable outcomes for the city and beyond.
