Chery has revealed the first detailed specifications for its upcoming Stockman dual-cab ute, confirming the diesel plug-in hybrid will launch in Australia later this year with headline figures designed to put it squarely in the fight against the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger PHEV, GWM Cannin Alpha and JAC Hunter.

Set to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2026, the Stockman will combine a new 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with Chery’s Super Hybrid system, producing a claimed 350kW and 800Nm while offering up to 100km of electric-only driving range under the less stringent NEDC test cycle.

The figures make the Stockman one of the most powerful electrified utes yet announced for Australia and mark another escalation in the rapidly expanding plug-in hybrid ute segment.

At this stage only the 360kW/1010Nm JAC Hunter is a PHEV ute wth higher outputs.

Unlike any existing PHEV ute, the Chery will pair diesel power with electrification rather than a petrol engine, a combination the company says is designed to deliver improved towing performance, efficiency and long-distance touring capability.

The company also confirmed the Stockman will match key rivals with a 3500kg braked towing capacity, four-wheel drive and at least 247mm of ground clearance.

Double wishbone front suspension and heavy-duty rear leaf springs have been fitted, while all-terrain tyres will be standard.

Dimensionally, the Stockman measures 5450mm long, 2010mm wide and 1890mm high, with a 3250mm wheelbase.

Its cargo tub measures 1560mm long, 1560mm wide and 500mm deep, meaning it will be able to fit an Aussie pallett.

While Chery is yet to announce battery capacity, fuel economy or payload, it says the diesel-electric system has been developed to deliver the benefits of electrification without compromising towing, payload or off-road performance.

The Stockman forms part of Chery’s growing ute strategy for Australia. The diesel plug-in hybrid will launch first in the fourth quarter of this year, with a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid variant due to join the range in 2027.

Pricing, model grades and the full Australian specification will be announced closer to launch, but Chery has previously indicated it intends to be highly competitive in a segment now occupied by the BYD Shark 6, GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, Ford Ranger PHEV and the newly launched JAC Hunter.

Chery Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris said the Stockman represented the company’s vision for the next generation of dual-cab utes, combining strong performance with efficiency and genuine capability.

“Offering both Petrol and Diesel Plug-in Hybrid options allows us to cater for customer demands be it off-road performance or a more urban focus” said Harris.

“Ute buyers expect a vehicle that can work hard during the week, tackle weekend adventures and deliver strong value. Our Super Hybrid technology is designed to meet those expectations by combining electric driving capability with the power, towing and off-road performance customers demand.”

Further technical details, including pricing and model grades, will be announced ahead of the Stockman’s Australian launch later this year.
