I tested eight organic pajama brands. These are my favorites, ranked by breathability, softness, and comfort.
The pajama spectrum is broad. On one end, there are cute silk sets that double as loungewear. On the other, shorts and a tee you’ve had since 8th grade. I lived on that second end for years.
In college, my go-to pajama shorts were an XL pair I’d bought in middle school. Stained, faded, stretched, and completely unsightly, but somehow they made the journey with me all the way to a boyfriend kindly asking me to throw them away. He was right. I tossed them and bought a few cuter, correctly-sized pairs that carried me through the next few years. But even the cutest pajamas start to look forlorn after hundreds of uncaring washes and nights of tossing and turning. Once those wore out, I went right back to my old ways: Loose shorts and an old tee. Until I sat down to write this post, that had been my nightly uniform for years.

I’ve been mostly single for the last five years, so pajamas weren’t something I gave much thought to. My only requirement: Stay cool, since I’m a very hot sleeper. Then I met my partner, who lovingly pointed out my pajama deficit all over again, and this guide couldn’t have come at a better time. When you’re sleeping alone, it’s easy to stop paying attention to what you’re wearing to bed. But there’s something to be said for treating yourself to cuter, well-made, adult pajamas before someone else is around to see the tattered shorts, not because anyone’s criticizing your style, but because you deserve to feel good in what you wear to sleep, too. We spend half our lives in bed: might as well enjoy it.
And after receiving 8 new pairs of pajamas to review, I’ve gone from someone who couldn’t care less about their night attire to someone who gets genuinely excited to pick out a pair and lounge in them the night before and the next morning. I’m also feeling more confident when I’m traveling, at my boyfriend’s place, or just making my morning matcha alone. For three weeks straight, I slept in a different pair every night, carefully tracking how each one affected my sleep quality and comfort. I now have true favorites: My top two are in my suitcase as I head off on a three-week trip to Idaho and then upstate New York to see friends.
Along the way, I learned a lot about the materials, fabric weights, and styles that work best for me. Since we’re all different, here’s what matters to me so you can read this guide through the lens of your own preferences:
- I need to stay cool. You won’t catch me sleeping in sweatpants or long sleeves: I’ll end up getting up in the middle of the night to change. If you’re a cold sleeper, we’ll likely land on different favorites. That said, I’ve been wearing a lot of the pajama pants around the house as sweatpants, and they’re great for that too.
- I’m a big tosser and turner. I needed fabrics that could move with me. No-stretch fabrics like linen and silk were uncomfortable because they’d bunch or pull, waking me up. Jersey fabrics turned out to be my clear favorite.
So, without further ado, here’s what actually passed the three-week test: 8 pairs of organic pajamas worth ditching your old college shorts for.
How to choose the best pajamas for yourself (and anyone you’re gifting!):
When it comes to choosing the best pajamas, it’s all about finding the perfect blend of comfort, seasonality, and personal style. Start by thinking about the time of year and where the lucky recipient lives — lightweight, breathable fabrics like organic cotton, linen, or bamboo are ideal for warmer climates, while cozy flannel or thermal cotton is perfect for cooler ones.
Next, consider the style: Some people love the effortless feel of a flowy nightgown, while others gravitate toward the structure and coverage of a matching pajama set. Think about what makes you feel most at ease as you unwind, and ask your loved ones about their own preferences. Fabric choice is key — natural, breathable materials like organic cotton, TENCEL™, and modal are soft on the skin and better for those with sensitivities.
Pay attention to the fit, too: Waistbands, buttons, and elastic should be secure but never restrictive. Bonus features like pockets, adjustable waists, or machine-washable designs can make all the difference in your bedtime routine.
And for those who care about sustainability, look for brands that use ethical production methods and hold certifications such as GOTS or OEKO-TEX. The best pajamas are the ones that feel effortless, match your lifestyle, and help you ease into sleep in total comfort.
Our criteria & methodology:
I slept in these pajamas for three weeks straight, testing each pair against my own criteria: Cool, breathable, soft, comfortable. But since we spend nearly half our lives asleep, and can absorb whatever chemicals are touching our skin through our pajamas and sheets, organic and nontoxic matter matters just as much. Here’s the full criteria every brand on this list was vetted against:
- SIZE-INCLUSIVE | We’ve included options that carry a large range of sizes so you can find the right fit for you.
- SUSTAINABLE | All of the brands on this list use sustainable sourcing and manufacturing, including fair labor practices, to ensure your purchase is low-impact. Many of these brands have give-back programs, too.
- ORGANIC & NONTOXIC | The brands on this list prioritize using certified organic, natural, and recycled materials that are never treated with harsh chemicals so they’re safe for you and the earth.
- ECO-FRIENDLY | The brands on this list avoid synthetic materials — that can take forever to break down, emitting microplastics along to way — and over-production to reduce harm to the earth. We’ve noted brands that are carbon-neutral or have other eco-initiatives.
(function(){if(window.__myVideoDisplayDimsInit){return;}window.__myVideoDisplayDimsInit=true;function apply(v){if(!v||!v.videoWidth||!v.videoHeight){return;}var w=v.videoWidth;var h=v.videoHeight;var ratio=w+” / “+h;v.style.aspectRatio=ratio;v.setAttribute(“width”,String(w));v.setAttribute(“height”,String(h));var p=v.closest(“figure.wp-block-video”);if(p){p.style.aspectRatio=ratio;}}function wire(v){if(!v||v.dataset.displayDimsBound===”1″){return;}v.dataset.displayDimsBound=”1″;if(v.readyState>=1){apply(v);}v.addEventListener(“loadedmetadata”,function(){apply(v);});v.addEventListener(“resize”,function(){apply(v);});}function scan(){document.querySelectorAll(“video[data-use-display-dimensions=”1″]”).forEach(wire);}scan();var mo=new MutationObserver(scan);mo.observe(document.documentElement,{childList:true,subtree:true});})();

}
Best For | Soft bamboo sleepwear
Materials | 95% premium viscose from bamboo, 5% spandex
Size Range | XS–3XL
Price Range | $148 (long sleeve pajama set)–$68 (pajama shorts)
Grace’s Pick: Women’s Bamboo Stretch-Knit Short Sleeve Pajama Set
Cozy Earth is best known for its bamboo viscose sleepwear and bedding, built around the idea of everyday luxury: Soft, breathable, temperature-regulating basics with relaxed, timeless silhouettes. I tried the Bamboo Stretch-Knit Short Sleeve Pajama Set in black with white piping, and it’s already become my new everyday pajama. They’re cute and flattering enough that I feel good lounging around the house in them, and the bamboo fabric kept me cool even on a hot, AC-less night on vacation. I’m already eyeing the green pair next, and if you’re more of a long-sleeve-and-pants sleeper, Cozy Earth makes the same style in that option too.

2. Jungmaven
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;

}
Best For | Hemp-forward fabrics
Materials | 55% hemp, 45% organic cotton jersey
Size Range | XS–2XL
Price Range | $98–$136 (sleep/lounge shorts); $44–$66 (tank tops)
Grace’s Picks: Sun Short + Lorel Tee
Jungmaven is a California-based brand known for its hemp-forward basics and commitment to regenerative fashion. Founded in the early 1990s, they blend hemp with organic cotton into soft, breathable essentials built to last, cut and sewn in California with an eye toward timeless silhouettes and ethical production. They might not have a “pajamas” section on their website, but what really makes pajamas pajamas anyway? To me, it’s not a label, it’s how comfortable the clothes actually are to sleep in, so I took some liberties and made the Sun Short + Lorel Tee mine. I already owned a pair of their versatile shorts that I’d wear to bed, on walks, and everywhere in between: They’re also a genuinely flattering length that doesn’t cut you off in the wrong spot. I love that they’re inherently more sustainable in that they can double as daywear or sleepwear. I usually wear a small, but I sized up to a large in the shorts for a baggier, comfier fit to sleep in.

3. Quince
.icons-library-acf-row {

}
Best For | Family sets
Materials | 100% European linen
Size Range | XS–XL
Price Range | $20 (sleep mask)–$170 (robe)
Grace’s Pick: 100% European Linen Shorts Pajama Set
Quince has built a reputation for offering high-quality, luxury-feeling essentials at prices that don’t match the “luxury” label, cutting out the traditional retail markup by shipping directly from their factories to you. I’m always a little surprised when I try a new category from Quince, and it’s just as high-quality as the last, and the 100% European Linen Shorts Pajama Set was no exception. These are genuinely cute and flattering, and I love wearing them around the house. Given my disclaimer earlier about being a toss-and-turner who needs a fabric that can move with me, this set didn’t quite work: I found myself getting bunched up in the linen, and the elastic waistband rolled through the night. If you’re more of a still sleeper, though, these would be a great fit. The linen itself feels high-quality, cool, and genuinely chic. Quince also makes a Bamboo Jersey Pajama Set, which sounds much better suited to my particular sleep quirks, so that’s next on my list to try.

}
Best For | Affordable loungewear
Materials | 100% organic cotton
Size Range | XS–3XL
Price Range | $28 (tank top)–$154 (sleep set)
Grace’s Picks: Organic Cool Stretch Lounge Pant + Organic Luxe Essential Crewneck Tee
All Pact apparel is made with GOTS-certified organic cotton in fair trade factories, and we’re big fans of their easygoing styles, especially for anyone who sleeps in undies and basics. I tried their Organic Cool Stretch Lounge Pant and Organic Luxe Essential Crewneck Tee in black, and both are genuinely high-quality, soft, and well-made. I love the pants for around the house and running errands, but as we’ve established, I’m a hot sleeper, so these won’t be making it into my nightly rotation. When they’re back in stock, I’d reach for the Organic Luxe Essential Short instead. The crewneck, though, is perfect to mix and match with any pajama short, or even to wear during the day: A classic black basic you can dress up, sleep in, or work from home in.

5. MATE The Label
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}
Best For | Versatile pieces for lounge & sleep
Materials | TENCEL Lyocell, organic cotton
Size Range | XS–3X
Price Range | $48 (sleep tank)–$98 (sleep pant)
Grace’s Picks: Pointelle Tank + Pointelle Pant
MATE the Label makes sleepwear entirely from eco-friendly fabrics out of their downtown Los Angeles studio. Their pieces are made from TENCEL Lyocell and organic cotton, and it feels as effortlessly cool as it looks on their models. I tried the Pointelle Tank and Pointelle Pant, and this might be my new favorite lounge set – they are simply just CUTE! The fabric is thick and high-quality, and the pants were way too hot for summer sleeping, but the tank is great to mix and match with different bottoms if you run hot. I usually size up for sleep and lounge bottoms for extra comfort, but with this pair, I actually wish I’d stuck with my normal size since they run a bit big. This is the kind of set that’s perfect for a movie night: chic, cozy, and the kind of thing everyone will ask where you got. I wore a bra for the photos since the top runs loose and unsupportive, but for actual sleeping, I’d skip it: It’s plenty comfortable as is.

6. Boody
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;

}
Best For | Sensitive skin & cooling
Materials | 95% viscose made from bamboo, 5% elastane
Size Range | XS–XXL
Price Range | $36 (cami)–$90 (robe)
Grace’s Pick: Goodnight Slip Sleep Dress
Boody‘s garments, including its sleepwear collection, are crafted from viscose derived from organically grown, nontoxic bamboo, so I went in expecting something super-soft and breathable, and the brand delivered. I tried the Goodnight Slip Sleep Dress in Storm, and I’d never actually worn a sleep dress before this one, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Turns out: I love this thing. It’s cute, cool to sleep in, and genuinely easy to just slip on and go, no zippers, buttons, or ties to fuss with. It’s relaxed without being shapeless, and the built in bra feels supportive, so you don’t feel exposed if you need to run out and get the mail. I am a B-C cup for reference. It’s a little sexy too – my boyfriend loved the look!

7. Clementine Sleepwear
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}
Best For | Organic silk sleepwear
Materials | 100% organic silk
Size Range | XS–XL
Price Range | $308 (sleep shorts)–$701 (silk robe set)
Grace’s Picks: Organic Silk Pajama Set
Designed in Los Angeles out of a desire to create organic sleepwear that won’t harm you, no chemical washes, microplastics, or pesticides here, Clementine Sleepwear is a true standout in holistic luxury. Their 100% organic mulberry silk and nontoxic dyes skip the stripping chemical washes altogether, leaving the fabric rich in natural amino proteins. I tried the Organic Silk Pajama Set in navy, and it’s genuinely cute and flattering, though I personally found it a little stiff for sleeping in since silk has no stretch to it. Sizing up might solve that for me, but wearing a small (my normal size) every time I changed positions in the night, I’d wake up finding the set bunched up in an uncomfortable spot. If you’re not much of a mover in your sleep, though, this set would be perfect and feels truly luxe. I’m actually gifting my best friend a white pair for her wedding: They’ll be perfect for getting ready and wedding photos.

8. Organic Basics
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}
Best For | Affordable organic cotton basics
Materials | 97% organic cotton, 3% elastane
Size Range | XXS–XL
Price Range | $68 (pants)–$95 (button down shirt)
Grace’s Picks: Core Sleep Poplin Shirt + Core Sleep Poplin Shorts
Certified B Corp Organic Basics is all about sustainability plus longevity, designed in Copenhagen with an eye toward comfort, quality, and versatility that holds up wherever you’re headed. I tried the Core Sleep Poplin Shirt and Core Sleep Poplin Shorts, and loved the light fabric and preppy look. Made from 97% organic cotton in a poplin weave, they’ve got that cozy-crisp feel, basically like sleeping in sheets. I’m not usually a long-sleeve sleeper, but I loved this shirt paired with jeans just as much, and would happily wear the set with short sleeves too if that were an option. One thing to note: The light blue is a bit sheer, so keep that in mind depending on your comfort level. And I still can’t get over how affordable this is – Organic Basics has some of the best bang for your buck on this whole list.

Frequently asked questions about organic pajamas:
Why shop for sustainable & organic pajamas?
It turns out that what we sleep in is just as important as what we sleep on. Synthetic fabrics like rayon, polyester, and acrylic have all been found to contain PFAS, “forever chemicals” that don’t ever break down after being absorbed into our bodies and the earth. These chemicals have been linked to several serious health concerns, like asthma, cancer, and endocrine disruption. But because PFAS are also often used to achieve textile enhancement properties (wrinkle-resistance, water-repellant, quick-drying), they can be found in some natural materials like non-organic cotton as well. Which is why choosing certified organic fabrics that have been cleared for PFAS use is so important.
What are the benefits of organic & natural fiber pajamas?
First, let’s talk breathability. Natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, or bamboo allow air to circulate around your body, which helps regulate temperature as you sleep. That means less waking up in a sweaty tangle of sheets and more uninterrupted, cozy rest. Unlike synthetic fabrics, which can trap heat and moisture, natural materials keep things fresh and dry — even on warm nights.
Then there’s the weight and feel. Natural fiber pajamas often have a softer, more luxurious drape that gets better with each wash. Whether you like crisp and cool or warm and plush, you can find a natural fabric to match your preference — and they won’t weigh you down or cling like synthetic blends often do.
Durability is another plus. While fast fashion sleepwear can pill or stretch out quickly, high-quality organic PJs tend to last longer and hold their shape. Because they’re made without harsh chemical treatments, the fibers stay strong without breaking down prematurely — saving you money and reducing waste.
And here’s the kicker: Many synthetic pajamas are treated with chemicals like PFAS (also known as “forever chemicals”) or flame retardants, which can act as endocrine disruptors and have been linked to hormone imbalance, fertility issues, and more. Organic sleepwear avoids these altogether, giving you peace of mind that you’re not absorbing hidden toxins night after night.
What are the relevant certifications for organic PJs?
When shopping for organic pajamas, certifications are your best friend. They help ensure that the materials used are grown and processed without harmful chemicals, that ethical labor practices are followed, and that the finished garment is safe for you and the planet. Since terms like “natural” or “eco-friendly” aren’t regulated, looking for official certifications is the most reliable way to verify a product’s sustainability claims.
Here are some of the most relevant certifications to look for when buying organic PJs:
- Fair Trade Certified: While not specific to organic content, this certification guarantees that workers involved in the garment’s production are paid fairly and work under safe conditions. It’s a great complement to organic certifications.
- Certified Organic by USDA or similar national bodies: This ensures the raw cotton or fiber used in the pajamas was grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): The gold standard for organic textiles. GOTS ensures that the entire production process—from growing the cotton to dyeing and sewing the garment—meets strict environmental and social criteria. It also prohibits the use of toxic dyes, heavy metals, and GMOs.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: This certification tests for harmful substances in textiles. Even if a product isn’t made from organic fibers, OEKO-TEX certification means it’s been independently verified to be free of chemicals known to be harmful to human health.
- MADE SAFE®: A newer but growing certification that screens products for toxic chemicals and pollutants that could impact human health and the environment. A “Made Safe” label on your pajamas means peace of mind.
