Photovoltaics lead Spain’s electricity mix for four consecutive months

Solar energy was the leading source of electricity in Spain during July for the fourth consecutive month.

Data published by Spanish electricity company Red Eléctrica shows solar produced 7,696 GWh in July, representing a new all-time high for monthly solar generation and contributing 28.3% of the national electricity mix.

Record solar generation helped drive total renewable generation to a monthly record of 14,699 GWh in July, equivalent to 54.1% of all electricity generated in Spain. The figure is also 5.8% more than a year ago.

When generation from self-consumption installations, estimated at 1,654 GWh in July, is also included, the share of renewables in the electricity mix rises to 55.7%.

Last month’s increase in solar production coincided with a sharp rise in electricity demand caused by high temperatures.

Once the effects of temperature and working days were adjusted, national demand grew by 3.5% compared to July 2025. In gross terms, demand reached 25,144 GWh, which is 6.9% more than a year earlier and the highest monthly consumption volume since January 2008.

After photovoltaics, combined cycle gas turbines represented the second-largest share of electricity generation last month, with 20.1%, followed by nuclear power (18.2%), wind power (14.4%), and hydropower (7.6%).

Overall, technologies with zero CO2 equivalent emissions accounted for 72.4% of all electricity produced, 7.7% more than in July of the previous year.

Additional data reveals 906 GWh were integrated into the grid using battery and pumped hydro storage systems during July, with 510 GWh subsequently returned to the system.

By the end of the month, these infrastructures had accumulated 396 GWh of stored energy, helping to shift some renewable energy production to peak demand hours and reinforcing the flexibility of the electricity system.
