Nama Water Services has launched a pilot project in Oman to grow camelina, a crop widely used in biofuel production, using recycled water. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with Hema Energy.
The project supports Nama’s sustainability strategy and aligns with Oman’s broader green economy goals. It uses treated wastewater for irrigation, demonstrating how recycled water can serve as a resource for agricultural and energy development rather than simply being discharged.
The pilot has several aims. These include strengthening water and food security, cutting carbon emissions, and supporting Oman’s shift toward cleaner energy sources.
A central part of the project is building a technical system to measure camelina’s carbon sequestration potential. Researchers will also assess whether the crop is economically viable for production at a larger scale.
Under the partnership, Nama Water Services will supply recycled water for irrigation. Hema Energy will handle technical management, operations, and data analysis for the project.
Several national institutions are involved in supporting the pilot. Sultan Qaboos University will provide research and technical validation. The Environment Authority will oversee environmental compliance. The Oman Net Zero Centre will ensure the project aligns with the country’s net-zero targets.
The pilot reflects a wider push in Oman to combine water reuse, renewable energy, and climate-focused innovation as part of the country’s sustainable development goals.
