A fire at Greenfield Global’s Chatham facility was isolated to the storage tank farm, and won’t affect the plants ability to distill corn to ethanol, the company said in a statement.

The Chatham ethanol facility is a major buyer and processor of Ontario corn.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted to identify opportunities for continuous improvement once cleanup activities have been completed,” the company added.
A preliminary assessment of the scene indicated the fire was caused by lightning, Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement. The fire was extinguished by the morning of Sept. 16, 2026.
There were no injuries.
Greenfield Global says that cleanup and containment has commenced, and government agencies are involved to manage the environmental impact.

There were 90 to 100 emergency service people on site to combat the blaze, including 20 vehicles from Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue and firefighting teams from St. Clair Township Fire Services and the Nova Fire Response Team.
