Algenesis has earned a Gold Medal from EcoVadis, moving up from Silver in a single year. The San Diego materials science company scored 82 out of 100, placing it in the 96th percentile of companies EcoVadis rates worldwide.
Algenesis develops Soleic, a bio-based, fully biodegradable polyurethane platform. The material is designed to replace petroleum-based plastics without leaving microplastics behind. It carries USDA BioPreferred certification and produces 50 to 65 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional alternatives.
EcoVadis rates companies on a 0 to 100 scale across four categories. These are environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Medals are awarded by percentile rather than a fixed score. Algenesis posted its strongest results in ethics, scoring 94, and environment, scoring 89. EcoVadis has now assessed more than 175,000 companies across over 180 countries.
Nick Sandland, Chief Business Officer at Algenesis, said the jump from Silver to Gold reflects how the company operates day to day. He added that Algenesis exists to remove microplastics from the world. According to Sandland, the independent rating shows partners that the company holds itself to the same standard internally as it does in the materials it produces.
The Gold Medal adds to a run of recent recognition for Algenesis. The company also received the 2026 ACS Green Chemistry Challenge Award this year. It holds ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification, alongside USDA BioPreferred certification across its Soleic product line.
As global brands tighten supply chain and ESG requirements, the EcoVadis rating gives Algenesis’s footwear, apparel, consumer goods, and industrial partners independent confirmation of its sustainability practices. Algenesis was spun out of the University of California San Diego and is built on more than 17 peer-reviewed studies.
