Apple announced a series of new sustainability initiatives in India, including a new investment partnership to help scale renewable energy capacity across the country, as well as partnerships aimed at reducing plastic pollution and supporting green solutions startups.
Apple’s new initiatives include an expanded collaboration with renewable energy developer CleanMax, which will see Apple invest INR 100 crore (USD$10.5 million) to support the development of more than 150 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity, and with the opportunity to expand further in the future. Apple said that the partnership will advance its efforts to scale renewable energy across its supply chain in India.
Under its initiatives to reduce plastic pollution, Apple announced that it is supporting recovery-focused recycling and waste management projects with WWF-India. The initiative builds on WWF-India’s collaboration with waste-management pioneer Saahas Zero Waste in Goa, focused on establishing facilities that collect, sort, and recover recyclable materials with full traceability, preventing plastic leakage into surrounding ecosystems. Apple said that it is supporting WWF-India’s expansion of the system to new regions, in collaboration with local authorities, communities, and waste workers.
Additionally, Apple said that it has launched a new partnership with impact investor Acumen to support early-stage entrepreneurs, by providing catalytic grants to six green enterprises developing solutions across waste management, circular economy and consumption, and regenerative agriculture and livelihoods, with the program also providing mentorship, strategic guidance, technical assistance, and network access to help validate and scale promising business models.
Sarah Chandler, Vice President of Environment and Supply Chain Innovation at Apple, said:
“At Apple, our commitment to the environment is also a driving force for innovation — across the company and around the world. We’re proud to expand our efforts to invest in India’s clean energy economy and protect the country’s precious natural resources.”
