Many of Canadian agriculture’s most innovative products get their first public look at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show. This year was no exception, as Bayer unveiled Vyconic soybeans.
The soybean uses new crop technology that provides tolerance to five herbicides: glyphosate, glufosinate, dicamba, 2,4-D and mesotrione, enabling a broad suite of weed-management options.
WHY IT MATTERS
Ontario growers are seeing more hard-to-control broadleaf weeds, and Vyconic stacks two new herbicide tolerances on top of XtendFlex soybeans to fight them.
Adam Pfeffer, Bayer’s technical product lead for corn and soybeans, said Vyconic gives growers more weed-control flexibility, while its enhanced genetics support higher yield potential and improved agronomics.
“We are in the final stages of regulatory approval. We have European stack approval and Chinese approval,” Pfeffer said, adding that product approval is proceeding on a standard trade timeline.
What the stack adds
He said current products are controlling weeds effectively, but Vyconic brings those weed-control options under one umbrella.
“You have dicamba tolerance, you have 2,4-D tolerance. You can mix and match your Group 4s,” he said. “Mesotrione brings additional broadleaf residual to the package.”
With mesotrione and 2,4-D, Bayer is adding two new herbicide active-ingredient tolerances to its most recent generation of soybean traits, XtendFlex soybeans.
In an earlier press release, the company said both herbicide active ingredients are effective against a wide range of broadleaf weeds, including kochia, fleabane, Palmer amaranth and waterhemp.
Weeds on the rise in Ontario
Pfeffer said the release of Vyconic comes as farmers are seeing more of these weeds across Ontario.

Pfeffer said the company continues to expand its research to do “anything we can do to make our weed-control programs more robust and durable.”
Vyconic is scheduled for a limited launch for the 2027 planting season in Canada and the United States.
