What we consider waste is increasingly becoming a starting point for innovation. Industrial byproducts, plastic waste, carbon dioxide and residues from food production can contain valuable resources that research and technology can help recover and put to new use.
This shift is at the heart of the circular economy: moving away from a linear model of production and disposal towards systems that keep resources in use, create new value and reduce environmental pressures.
Across the WAITRO Global Innovation Family, researchers are exploring what this transition can look like in practice. From clean energy technologies and alternative fuels to food ingredients and bioeconomy applications, these four initiatives demonstrate how science can uncover new possibilities in materials that might otherwise go unused.
Creating New Value from Coal Ash in Botswana
The Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) is exploring new possibilities for coal ash through its B-CIRC initiative.
Rather than treating coal ash solely as an industrial waste stream, researchers are investigating how it can be transformed into valuable materials for energy storage and clean energy technologies. The initiative aims to create a circular and locally driven approach to battery and energy innovation, connecting waste valorization with Botswana’s evolving energy landscape.
Transforming Plastic Waste into Fuel in Indonesia
Plastic waste presents a particular challenge in places where collection, transportation and recycling infrastructure can be difficult to establish. The National Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BRIN) is addressing this challenge through its PITARA technology.
Deployed on Derawan Island, the system uses multistage pyrolysis to convert difficult-to-manage plastic waste into fuel. By linking waste management with local energy solutions, the technology demonstrates how research can develop approaches adapted to specific local challenges and resource needs.
Using CO₂ as a Resource for Food Production
Circular approaches are also creating new opportunities within the food industry. Through the FERM4FOOD project, AINIA is exploring how carbon dioxide generated during industrial fermentation can become a resource rather than a waste stream.
The initiative captures fermentation-derived CO₂ and uses precision fermentation to transform it into high-value ingredients such as microbial proteins and oils. In doing so, the project explores new pathways for making food production more resource-efficient while creating value from an existing industrial byproduct.
Giving Coffee Byproducts a Second Life in Colombia
At the Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA), researchers are exploring new applications for coffee mucilage, a byproduct generated during coffee processing.
By transforming the material into an ingredient for functional foods, including probiotic yogurt, the research demonstrates how agricultural residues can become the basis for new products. Beyond reducing waste, the approach could create new opportunities for coffee-growing communities and contribute to the development of Colombia’s bioeconomy.
Rethinking Resources Through Research
Coal ash, plastic waste, carbon dioxide and coffee-processing residues may appear to have little in common. Yet these initiatives share a fundamental idea: materials traditionally considered waste can become resources when research finds new ways to use them.
