Belgian agricultural technology company Biotalys announced it has reached the first research milestone in its partnership with Syngenta to develop a protein-based bioinsecticide.
Initial laboratory tests showed promising results with bioactive ingredients developed using Biotalys’ AGROBODY technology against insect molecular targets. The companies are working on a solution for key crop pests.
Carlo Boutton, interim CEO of Biotalys, said the milestone validates the potential of the company’s technology platform in insect control. “Working with industry leaders like Syngenta enables us to accelerate the path from research to the field.”
Biotalys develops protein-based biocontrols as an alternative to conventional chemical pesticides. The company’s approach targets specific pests while aiming to reduce environmental impact compared to traditional insecticides.
The technology addresses a growing problem in agriculture. Insect resistance to existing pesticides continues rising, while regulatory and environmental constraints are tightening. Growers need new solutions that remain effective over time.
The partnership teams will now move to the next research phase, testing active ingredients on living organisms. Syngenta will pay Biotalys a milestone payment, though the company said the amount won’t materially impact its current cash runway.
Biotalys, listed on Euronext, is based in Ghent, Belgium. The company’s AGROBODY platform develops biocontrol solutions for both pre-harvest and post-harvest crop protection. Its pipeline includes product candidates targeting various crop pests and diseases.
Syngenta, one of the world’s largest agricultural companies, has been expanding its biological product portfolio alongside traditional chemical offerings.
