Canberra-based biotech Nourish Ingredients has struck a partnership to scale up production of its biomanufactured, animal-free fats. The move comes as the startup works to close its latest fundraising round.
Nourish Ingredients uses precision fermentation and enzymatic bioprocessing to create what it calls designer fats. These bio-based lipids are built to replace animal fats in food products. The company is now working with specialty lecithin producer SD Guthrie to accelerate manufacturing of Creamilux, its biomanufactured dairy fat alternative.
The partnership combines Nourish Ingredients’s fermentation technology and biotech IP with SD Guthrie’s manufacturing scale and lipid expertise. SD Guthrie also brings European infrastructure to the table. Together, the companies aim to deliver a reliable, scalable supply of the bio-based fat across Europe and other key markets with lower risk and a faster route to commercialisation.
The deal expands Nourish Ingredients’s European footprint and customer reach in the growing bioeconomy. It follows the launch of the company’s global commercial hub in Leiden, Netherlands, a year earlier. That facility is now fully operational and focused on sales and product applications for its bio-based portfolio, according to co-founder and CEO James Petrie.
Petrie said the company recently brought on a new commercial advisor and portfolio manager as it pushes further into sales. He said the SD Guthrie partnership adds meaningful volume behind that biomanufacturing push.
He added that the company’s demonstration and commercial teams can now put commercially produced, biotech-derived Creamilux directly in front of European food manufacturers and other global customers. Petrie said the combination of a commercial presence and proven industrial-scale biomanufacturing supply gives the company the platform it set out to build in the EU.
