Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has launched a new €1.7 billion ($1.9 billion) bioenergy fund, supported by a €200 million commitment from the European Investment Fund (EIF). The Advanced Bioenergy Fund II (ABF II) aims to raise €1.5 billion to finance large-scale biomethane and bioenergy projects across Europe, including Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, and Finland.

Backed by EU initiatives like InvestEU and REPowerEU, the fund aligns with Europe’s strategic goals to reduce fossil fuel imports, enhance energy security, and expand domestic renewable energy sources. CIP plans to invest primarily in industrial-scale biogas plants utilizing anaerobic digestion to convert agricultural waste, manure, and other feedstocks into biomethane, a renewable gas compatible with existing gas infrastructure.

This biomethane can decarbonize sectors such as industry and maritime transport, supporting Europe’s climate and energy security objectives.

EIF Deputy Chief Executive Merete Clausen emphasized that the fund’s focus on renewable gases strengthens Europe’s energy resilience. “Supporting new biogas projects helps boost domestic renewable energy, enhances energy security, and accelerates the green transition,” she stated.

The fund’s primary focus will be on greenfield projects in supportive regulatory markets. CIP’s existing pipeline of bioenergy projects provides investors with clear project development pathways, while policymakers see biomethane as a practical, scalable solution that integrates seamlessly into current energy systems.

Thomas Dalsgaard, CIP Partner and head of the advanced bioenergy team, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “This €200 million investment marks a key milestone toward our €1.5 billion target and demonstrates strong market demand for domestic biomethane across Europe.”

With over €37 billion raised and operations in more than 30 countries, CIP’s scale enables it to leverage expertise and capital to support Europe’s transition to renewable energy and industrial resilience.
