First Nations Agriculture and Finance Ontario is launching an Indigenous-focused one-week training course, Introduction to beef cattle, this fall.
The course, which teaches beef cattle management and production fundamentals, is the result of a partnership between the FNAFO, the Ontario Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and First Nation Economic Reconciliation, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness and Beef Farmers of Ontario
Introduction to beef cattle’s aim is to increase the agricultural participation of Indigenous Peoples, strengthen local food systems and create pathways toward entrepreneurship and economic development.
The hands-on educational program is geared towards raising beef cattle for personal homesteads, community food security initiatives, or as the foundation for a future agricultural business. Participants will gain practical knowledge and real-world experience through training sessions, guest speakers, and visits to active beef cattle farms and processing facilities.
The curriculum includes:
- Beef cattle farm basics
- Bovine nutrition and feed supplements
- Breeding and reproduction
- Calving
- Herd tracking and animal health
Two sessions will be offered across Ontario this fall: the southern Ontario course in Tyendinaga from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 and the northern Ontario session in Bruce Mines from Oct. 19 to 23.
The cost is $150, with organizers encouraging early registrations because spaces are limited.
