Infinium has introduced mSAF, a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) platform built on methane-based feedstocks. The offering converts renewable natural gas, biogas, flare gas and other qualified methane streams into low-carbon aviation fuel.
The launch expands the range of feedstocks and locations available for Infinium’s projects. It also complements the company’s existing carbon dioxide-based eSAF business. Infinium says no single feedstock pathway can meet rising demand for sustainable aviation fuel on its own, so diversifying sources is key. Biogas, renewable natural gas and flare gas are already collected at landfills, dairies and wastewater facilities across multiple regions, offering new end uses for these streams.
Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle said mSAF expands what the company’s platform can do, giving it another way to apply proven technology across more locations.
Both product lines share Infinium’s core synthesis technology, called Synthesize, a proprietary system for converting gas into liquid hydrocarbons. The mSAF platform also uses Infinium’s Reform technology, an electrified steam methane reformer designed to lower the carbon footprint of converting methane into syngas. Unlike conventional gas-fired reforming, which burns feedstock to generate heat, Infinium’s system uses renewable electricity instead. This preserves more feedstock carbon for fuel production and increases yield.
Infinium worked with RMI, an independent climate research organization, to assess the broader biogas and renewable natural gas opportunity. RMI’s Bryan Fisher said these feedstocks could offer real climate and commercial value, but only with rigorous lifecycle accounting and credible certification.
Infinium noted that carbon intensity will vary by project, depending on methane source, leakage rates and energy mix. The company will calculate and independently certify carbon intensity for each project under relevant regulatory and voluntary frameworks.
