Bower Collective, the household cleaning product B Corp brand, has partnered with fellow B Corp, Bristol-based biomaterials innovator Kelpi to launch a world-first. A paper sachet containing a liquid product, made using a bio-based coating derived from renewably sourced seaweed that matches fossil fuel plastic’s performance.

The sachets are being used for 5ml samples of Bower Collective’s hand wash. Kelpi’s proprietary biomaterial coating gives the paper the water barrier performance needed to hold liquid formulations. The company says it matches the performance of conventional fossil fuel-derived coatings.

The sachets were manufactured by Guardpack, a UK-based producer of sachets and wet wipes. Kelpi says the bio-based material was applied as a drop-in solution on Guardpack’s existing filling lines, requiring no equipment changes.

Sachets have traditionally been difficult to recycle due to their multi-laminate construction. Kelpi says its coated paper sachets can instead go into household paper recycling streams. The company also designed the biomaterial to biodegrade safely if it ends up in the natural environment.

Bower Collective co-founder and co-CEO Nick Torday said the partnership marks another step in the company’s mission to eliminate single use plastic from people’s homes. He described the sachet as a world-first for the company’s natural liquid product line.
