France has a commanding lead, with 265 more starred restaurants than second-place Italy. Japan ranks third with 351, followed by Germany with 336 and Spain with 283.

Europe occupies much of the upper ranking, while Japan is Asia’s standout. The U.S. places sixth with 276 restaurants. These figures also reflect where Michelin publishes guides, meaning the rankings are not a comprehensive measure of restaurant quality in every country.

What Does a Michelin Star Mean?

According to Michelin, its inspectors evaluate restaurants based on five key factors: ingredient quality, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the chef’s personality expressed through the cuisine, and consistency across visits.

Stars are awarded to restaurants rather than individual chefs. One star signifies high-quality cooking worth stopping for, two denotes excellent cooking worth a detour, and three represents exceptional cuisine worth a special journey.

At the three-star level, France leads with 31 restaurants, followed by Japan with 20. Spain and the U.S. each have 16. For a closer look at this elite tier, see which countries have the most three-star Michelin restaurants.
