The Crucial Role of Green Steel This Earth Day

Date:

Every Earth Day, we’re reminded of the urgent need to rethink how we live, work and build. Steel is everywhere—from the buildings we live and work in to the vehicles we drive and the infrastructure that connects us all. It’s the backbone of modern society. So, it’s no surprise that roughly two billion tons of steel are produced every year—a process that accounts for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions annually.

Why Green Steel Matters

For decades, steel has been produced using two main methods: the traditional blast furnace, which relies on coal in the form of coke, involves several processing steps and generates high levels of CO2 emissions; and the more recent electric arc furnace, which is comparatively cleaner but limited in scale.

At Boston Metal, we are pioneering a new way forward with Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE). Our breakthrough technology replaces fossil fuels with renewable electricity in an efficient, one-step process that creates value throughout the steel value chain.

Just recently, we reached a major milestone in our work to scale steel decarbonization technology: the successful commissioning of our multi-inert anode MOE industrial cell that produced tonnage steel. This accomplishment de-risks our technology and validates scalability to achieve commercial production.

The Bigger Picture

MOE is not just a cutting-edge innovation; it’s a critical solution for a net-zero future, and our commitment to sustainability goes beyond technology. At Boston Metal do Brasil, where MOE is recovering critical metals from mining waste, we’re planting trees as a symbol of our growth and dedication to a more sustainable future.

Through our Sowing the Future project, part of our reforestation program, we seek to meet three needs with this initiative:

  1. Environmental licensing, specifically compensation for the suppression of vegetation
  2. Cultural connection by fostering a sense of belonging among employees as we build the identity of Boston Metal do Brasil
  3. Community engagement, which involves external stakeholders who contribute to the future of the company and are part of this growth process

Each tree planted is a step toward a healthier planet—and a reflection of our collective growth. Take a look at the video below to learn more about this significant environmental initiative.

Similarly, at our Woburn, Massachusetts facility, Boston Metal is giving back to the community this Earth Day by distributing plant seeds for pollinators and spreading awareness on local recycling and volunteer opportunities.

Choose Progress This Earth Day

This Earth Day, let’s celebrate the innovators reshaping the future. We’re proud of our progress to date and remain committed to revolutionizing steelmaking and advancing efficient, sustainable metals production.
