The Real Cost of Not Knowing

Regenerative agriculture has done a lot of good for a lot of operations, but somewhere along the way it also turned into a marketing word. Biological inoculants. Soil-boosting amendments. Proprietary blends with names that sound like they were focus-grouped by a pharmaceutical company. Some of it works. A lot of it doesn’t. And without a working understanding of how energy actually moves through a plant, how water actually moves through a landscape, and how nutrients actually move through soil biology, you’re stuck taking someone else’s word for it.

If you farm or ranch, you already know the feeling. Someone shows up with a jug, a bag, or a slide deck promising to fix your soil, your yields or your bottom line. They’ll throw around big words like “photosynthesis” or “facultative anaerobes” and even have a study or two to wave around as proof their product works. Some of these products and practices are genuinely good, but a lot of them aren’t. So, how’s a producer to know what’s worth spending money on and what isn’t? The answer: education. The better informed that farmers and ranchers are, the less likely they are to waste hard-earned money.

• Module 7 — Community Dynamics: How biodiversity and ecological succession shape soil function, and how that determines the pest, weed, and pathogen pressure you deal with for years to come.
