Construction of two grain storage silos has begun at Parrish and Heimbecker’s Port of Quebec terminal.

“This investment reflects our confidence in the future of Canadian agriculture and the critical role the Port of Quebec plays within our national network,” Anthony Kulbacki, president, P&H Grain Division, said in a press release.

WHY IT MATTERS
P&H’s review of its grain network is adding export storage in Quebec while closing a 93,000-tonne elevator in Owen Sound.

In May 2025, P&H acquired the deep-water bulk marine export terminal from Société en Commandite Terminal Grains in Quebec City, which Sollio Agriculture had operated since 2021.

Flat-bottom bins strengthen dockside flexibility

The two flat-bottom steel bins will replace the single on-site dome, strengthen the terminal’s operational flexibility and maintain its minimum storage capacity of 80,000 tonnes.

“By strengthening our capacity at this strategic export location, we will be even better able to connect Canadian growers to global markets while supporting efficient, reliable grain movement across our network,” Kulbacki said.

Managing noise, dust and traffic during the build

Silo construction is expected to wrap up in early winter 2028, with measures to manage noise, dust, traffic and minimize impacts on the community.

“Our goal is to deliver the best project possible with respect for the environment and our neighbours,” Kulbacki said.

Owen Sound terminal closes Dec. 18

The company has slated Owen Sound’s Great Lakes Elevator terminal for closure on Dec. 18.

A company representative told Farmtario in an email that “the decision followed an evaluation of our grain network and the [93,000-tonne] terminal’s long-term infrastructure needs.”

Where P&H has invested since 2019

The company said its plans focus on investments in “facilities and technology that best support the long-term needs of our business and customers.”

Since 2019, P&H’s Hamilton terminal has undergone several flour mill and capacity expansions. In 2020, P&H announced Goderich terminal infrastructure upgrades, including a mooring dolphin and vessel-loading spout. In 2023, upgrades to the Kincardine inland facility boosted speed and expanded storage capacity and in April 2026, P&H loaded its first ship at the Picton Terminal.
